I removed the fairing off my S2R1000 this weekend and noticed several vulnerable electrical connectors. I intend on leaving the fairing off (cleaner, quieter airflow, and reduced helmet lifting) and feel those connectors would benefit from some type of protection from the elements. I realize the fairing was not providing much protection for the connectors, but it did shield them from direct water exposure while washing the bike and riding in the rain.
What is the best way to protect these connectors? Shrink Wrap? Slathering them with dielectric grease? Other ideas?
I noticed the Sport Classics have a rubber boot over the connector that plugs into the bottom side of the instrument cluster. This connector looks particularly important, so I asked my dealer if the boot is available. He could not find it in the parts lists.
Thanks,
Jeff
You do not need a lot of dielectric grease. The thinnest coating over the metal connectors will work the best. The rest will melt off and attract grime. Permatex is easy to get, or Dow Corning MIL-S-8660 compound is also good, if you know people in the aircraft or marine trades.
I wrap vinyl tape around the harness mods I make (horns, GPS, Val 1, tenders, PCIII...) but it is to prevent chafe. The connectors I leave open because I know I'll be disconnecting them sometime and I do not want entrenched moisture.
