Title: Crash clean up: questions and suggestions
Post by: Novelo on March 31, 2010, 02:21:11 PM
Had a recent crash during the heal process decided to give the bike a look over to see what needs to be fixed and what not. Mostly its just little things here and there nothing too major. Although I managed to crack the Rizoma sets  :-[ I don't suppose I am able to buy just one set am I? Should I just look into getting new ones or find a totally different replacement? The right rear set is pretty F'd up main mounting bracket is cracked and the secondary bracket is broken as well. Overall the bike did well in the crash considering it went end-over-end a few times. The left side looks like nothing happened minus the clip-on bar being bent oddly because the right took all the beating and it is as straight as an arrow. Other side is a bit messy and will need a new throttle control and anodizing to the clutch cover and plate. The case took some hits as well but will not need to be replaced will try and get those carbon guards while I am in Italy. Waited 7 weeks when I ordered them from Commoto never came so I cashed in. The front end is what has me worried doesn't seem quite right. the axle seems to be bent but the forks look straight is this possible? Am I correct that if the axle is bent then I need to check the rotors, wheels and bearings as well? I plan on doing all the work myself as I enjoy working on the bike and gives me a since of security that everything is done right and with passion.

Headlight & tail light are destroyed already started to break the bike down during these pics tried to get a straight shot without distorting the dimensions of the forks but didn't really help much.

While it's possible you bent your axle, it may just be that your forks got twisted in the triples.  That's pretty common.  Do you have an under the triple front stand or a way of suspending the front end?  If so, you'll want to measure the fork height above the triple (so you can reinstall it properly).  Then take off the front wheel.  Then undo the clamps for the upper and lower triple on one fork leg.  Twist the fork leg in the triples and maybe move it up and down a bit.  Tighten the triple clamps bolts, making sure the fork leg height hasn't changed.  Do the same with the other side.  Reinstall the front wheel.   Then check the front wheel for binding.  You should get near three rotations of the front wheel (if you spin it hard) it before it stops turning.

There are some other things that could be bent, but I always do the fork-leg-twist-in-triples first to make sure that's not the problem.

I don't know if Rizoma sells replacement parts, but most rearset manufacturers will allow you to replace just one side.  It'll cost more than 50% of the original price though.   ;)

One minor thing that happed to me after a low speed laydown was that the hose came off the battery vent and spattered acid down the side of the frame.  Once I saw the start of the corrosion, I replaced the hose only to find more acid damage in the same area.  Acid had pooled inside the rubber boot of the battery compartment and spattered out during further riding.
