Title: Help! new blinkers don't work
Post by: 4DoorSi on April 01, 2010, 12:38:58 PM
So I just finished installing some new blinkers, and they don't work.  I got LED blinkers all around.  I installed the rear ones first, and checked that they worked.  They did, although they were rather dim.  I assumed this was because the bike wasn't running ( I was changing the oil at the same time) and therefore the voltage was low.  I proceeded to install the fronts, and then checked to see if they worked, and the didn't.  I checked the fuse, and it's fine.  The taillight still works fine, and that is on the same fuse.  The light on the gauges doesn't flash either when I hit the switch.  Any ideas?

I have a 99 M750 in case that matters.

You're going to need to add resistors in the blinker circuits or get an electronic flasher made for LED's.  You'll also need to add a diode in your dash so you don't bleed through the indicator light.

What he said. i just put a set of Rizomas on the front of my 97 and have the integrated LED in the tail. I had to use all four (2 on each side) resisters the Rizomas came with. I was seeing exactly what you were seeing with no additional resistors, both would blink with just one each, and they run perfect with the two each.

I'm no stranger to electronics, and I was affraid I would need resistors.  Any thoughts on what size/type to use?  I would like to get something locally, maybe radio shack or something.

I used 2 resistors of 6.8 Ohm (EDIT: just checked that value, is correct) and 25 W, one for left and one for right, when I installed my 4 kellerman micro 1000 led's. Gives a blink frequency close to stock...

I guess this would also work:

Gives you a bit slower blinkin'

So will I need 4 of these?  Or just 2.

I only used 2, I think the blinker system is a parallel system, with the resistors acting as a load. If u use one per side it's fine...

I have a 2000 and went a little different route. I did the mod Dan describes (works great) and instead of a different relay and a set of resistors I picked up a Badlands 'Metric Flash Pro'.

Some spade connectors from radio shack let me plug it into the stock harness w/o and cutting or non reversible changes. This module does the job of the relay a resistors as one bit, without the heat of resistors.

If you just want some resistors - I've got a pair of the nice Rizoma ones with bullet connectors than can just be plugged in, in parallel, I'd be willing to part with for about what a nice sixer would run me.
