Title: [Newb] '02 broken front brake pump bracket
Post by: stonescar on April 06, 2010, 12:18:47 PM
Parts catalogue (http://issuu.com/ducatiomaha/docs/m620ie_usa-02) (Page 64-65 Drawing 28)

If I understand these drawings correctly, it's the "spare bracket" that fastens the "front brake pump" to the handle bar that's broken.
I have no idea how this happened, but at the very end of last year's season I found it broken right off, cracked right across, making the whole front brake pump and lever completely loose. I didn't find any other signs of damage, so I'm still puzzled by how something like that could happen just standing outside on the stand. I had to fix it with duct tape just to drive it into the garage - not a satisfactory solution.

My monster is due for service, but the Ducati workshop is about 350 miles away, so at the very least I have to make a safe repair to ride the bike there. I'm a bit unnerved by the thought of having my front brake malfunction, so I want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

- Is this repairable with fx. 2-component epoxy? Would it be safe?
- Where can I get a replacement for this part online?
- Are there any complications in the process of replacing this bracket (adjustments etc.)?

Thanks for your time  ;)

epoxy miiiiiight hold it together, but I don't think I'd trust it for very long at all.

you could take a look in the parts for sale board, and look for anyone selling/parting out 'coffin' style master cylinders

It's not safe to repair that part.

You can purchase the part from several of our board sponsors, over in the left side menu.

As teddy said, there might be some available in the 'parts for sale'.

no way i would trust epoxy on a safety-critical item like that.

you can post a wanted to buy ad on this forum and check out fleabay for cheap used master cylinders and take the part off of it. in the meantime, maybe you can take a semi rigid piece of metal to hold the cylinder in place to get you home or whatever.

it's possible you overtightened the clamp and it developed a hairline crack.

I have one from an old coffin master somewhere. As often as I crash it probably isn't pretty

PM me your addy and it's yours.

Thanks a bunch! PM sent  [thumbsup]

Maybe it was overtightened, not sure, must have been the previous owner in that case. Didn't notice anything until it broke, but then again I'm new to bikes so I might have overlooked a crack forming.

Is there anything I should keep in mind when replacing it? (Other than overtightening) As a complete newb I want to be prepared for anything I could possibly do wrong.

sounds like a case of overtightening to me as well... i did the same thing to my throttle housing "bracket"...
