Title: Don't drive/ride into DC for next few days - maybe worse than Snowpocalypse 2.0
Post by: Geaux on April 09, 2010, 07:42:13 AM
Starting before the 2-day convention, barricades will be put up and parking will be eliminated in large portions of downtown.  In its place will be road closures, and police checking for government-issued photo IDs of residents, employees, and owners of businesses walking in those neighborhoods.  Trash cans and newspaper bins will be removed from most of those streets.  Bathrooms in Metro stations will be closed.  Convention Center Metro station will be closed completely.  DC Circulator will be rerouted.  Children's backpacks will be screened on the way to school.  Does anyone have more detail or a map of the potential chaos?  [bang]

WASHINGTON - The Nuclear Security Summit that will be held Monday and Tuesday is expected to impact everybody -- commuters, pedestrians and businesses -- both inside and outside of the District.
...

As hundreds of thousands of workers try to get to their jobs Monday and Tuesday, between 40 and 50 heads of state, all of their security people and their motorcades will be driving around the region. They will be traveling to and from hotels, embassies and the Washington Convention Center.
...

"Can you imagine the number of motorcades that we're going to have coming and going? Pedestrians, beware. These folks don't slow down, and they have diplomatic immunity."

Four rush hours -- Monday morning, Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon -- have the "potential to be wiped out," Anderson says.

Wait wait wait... there's bathrooms in the Metro?!

Judging by the smell, there's one in every corner!

Looks like I might be teleworking for a couple of days ;-)

Seriously tho, thank you very much for the warning, I had no idea.

All that build up for nothing?  Then again I switched to public transpo, so I didn't see if there was traffic.  A few cars were parked in front of Emergency No Parking signs on my street.  I did see one motorcade make a giant U-turn through a red light on K St to go to The Prime Rib.

They had a lot of streets blocked off, and it was a bit of a pain in the a**.  I live at 4th and I, so anytime I tried to go downtown from my place, I had to go around it.  It wasn't that much of nuisance though for me as far as work because I work walking distance from my place.  I could actually see a lot of the protestors out of my office window.  The funny thing is that they couldn't stand anywhere close to the Convention Center, so I'm not really sure how effective any of their protesting could have been.

This is sad, regardless of whose fault it was.  Military Vehicle Kills Female Bicyclist Downtown http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0410/725019.html (http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0410/725019.html)

That is really sad.  I ride my bicycle through the city all the time.  It's really dangerous, but luckily they are adding more bike lanes.

Do you do wheelies down P street?

I've unfortunately never even done a wheelie so far, but wheelying down P street sounds like fun so maybe I'll try it one day. (insert sarcasm)

I live at 7th and P and saw someone riding a wheelie down P st towards 4th on what might have been a 696. I bet the potholes make that even more fun.

Exactly.  I have a hard enough time not taking a spill while on two wheels.  I don't think I would be pulling any wheelies on the streets of DC.  I might start crying like a little baby if I drop it.   :'(  :'(  :'(
