Title: Question
Post by: uclabiker06 on April 09, 2010, 08:41:08 PM
Need to unscrew one of the two nuts that connect the rear exhaust header pipe to the engine for chrome coating.  (couldn't find that exact nut in chrome so i will have it chrome coated)Can't access the other second nut though, so i wanted to wait until the next valve job to get that one off for coating.

Will it be that bad to just take off the one nut that I do have access to, while leaving the other one in tact?  Usually i do use 1-2-1 sequence...Thanks in advance

DMP has chrome metric nuts.  They're in Chatsworth.

brings up a good question.
my exhaust header studs are rusting. is there a replacement that doesn't rust?

"DMP has chrome metric nuts.  They're in Chatsworth"

BUT they don't have that exact particular nut, so I asked them if they can chrome coat it for me.  Either way, even if they did have it I would still have the same problem cuz I only have access to one nut.

I know the proper thing to do would be to take both off for chrome coating when I do the valves but that will be a while and I would rather just get at least the most visible one in chrome.

I'm not understanding your statement "Can't access the other second nut though, so i wanted to wait until the next valve job to get that one off for coating."  Why can't you remove the inner vertical exhaust header nut?!?  I just did it on a DS1000 engine in the same frame as yours w/o a problem...  I used a 3" and a 6" extension and then a swivel connector and a 10mm socket (all 1/4" drive) and I got in there just fine.

Ok, I didn't really get a chance to feel it out just analyzed it visually b/c working space was VERY tight at the time.  Okay, great.  Did you have to take the gas tank off?  You need any help w/ anything before you leave Stuart?

I'm pretty well set for help at this point.  I test-rode my last 'SoCal-built' custom last night and am buttoning up the final few things on it today.

Gas tank doesn't have to be removed, but it IS **really** tight in there so go slow and you should get it.

Bike that's getting finished before I go is a customers mild-rebuild and re-'finish'.  Cafe-Racer bits and pieces will travel with me and he'll be finished in the state where I purchased him.
