Title: CORRRECTED : 4,5 to 5,5" rim on M800ie?
Post by: greenmonster on April 11, 2010, 12:57:05 PM
S'cuse me f not doing a proper search on this subject but I think someone knows (asking f a friend,
I don`t have a 800):

When you switch from a 4,5 to a 5,5" rim on a 800, do you need a different front sprocket f chain alignment?
Seems like a different rear sprocket carrier is needed.
Anything else you need f this mod?

5.5" is stock on S2R 800/1000. With a 180 tire.

When switching to a 5.5 you do need a new rear sprocket carrier. The front sprocket can normally be flipped so the shoulder is facing in instead of out.

Having done the switch, I can second ducpainter, make sure you get the sprocket carrier from the new wheel, and flip the front sprocket around.

I'm looking into doing the same swap.  I like the wider rear wheel/tire combo.  I want to run a 180 tire.  I currently have a 4.5" wheel with a 160 tire and a 525 chain.  My question is, can I not use the carrier from my 4.5" wheel?  Looks like it will swap right in.  My other concern would be clearance between chain and edge of tire.  My bike is a 2000 M750 DSS.

The carrier will fit in to the wheel, but nothing will line up.

You need the carrier from a 5.5 wheel.

Thanks for letting me know that.  I almost dropped the dough on a wheel that didnt have that carrier, and I was under the assumption that my current carrier would work.  So the carrier must be specific for the 5.5" wheel.  Where does one find that.

When switching to a 5.5 you do need a new rear sprocket carrier. The front sprocket can normally be flipped so the shoulder is facing in instead of out.

One caveat, if that front sprocket has a few thousand miles or more on it, I'd carefully check it for wear, and use a new one if I could detect any directional wear - if the teeth are worn enough that I could see any "hooking" I suspect it'd cause undue wear when flipped over. (tho if the chain and rear sprocket were also "half done" or more, I might just slap it all together for now and plan on swapping the lot out sooner rather than later)
