Title: Trailer Brake Controller
Post by: Punx Clever on April 11, 2010, 04:19:32 PM
Picking up a new trailer for the duc tomorrow... need advice on a brake controller.

Truck is a 2006 GMC sierra half ton with the towing package.  Already have all the wiring in place for a brake controller.  Just need the unit itself.

Trailer is a Pace American Outback 7x14 cargo trailer with dual axles.  Max GVR is about 7000#

So, advice? Suggestions? Previous experience?  I don't suspect the higher end models will brake the bank (about $150 or so right?), so the full range is fair game.

I honestly don't  think you'll need one for the Duc.  I towed a 3,000 lbs trailer with my Z71 with two full dressers with no stopping issues - if you plan ahead.  :)

Duc's home will at some point be a mobile shop with tool chests and work bench. meanwhile, it will be used to move the rest of my stuff (see: junk) whenever a new set of orders pops up.

I've used an off the shelf U-haul brake controller for towing roughly the same trailer specs but add a car (not bike). It has worked perfect for years.

each bike weighed in at over 800 lbs plus trailer.  unless you're doing a lot of "hill" driving I've rarely had a need to use them under 5,000 lbs.  BUT it's cheap insurance and I too have had good luck with the Uhaul version.
