Title: iPhone / mobile version of the site
Post by: bluemoco on April 13, 2010, 04:46:45 AM
I just joined corvetteforum.com, and they have a forum feature I've never seen before. There's an "iPhone" version of their site. It is a clean, simple version of their site that is faster and sized to fit the mobile screen.

I'm sure there are plenty of DMF members who'd use this. Any chance this is something that could be added to this site?

Please accept this as a suggestion-not a demand. I know you're all volunteers... ;D

That forum uses vbulletin.

I don't know if SMF has that feature. I'll look.

SMF does have this feature. Examples:

We'd need a modification version that works with our SMF version.

We have not yet updated to the 2.3 software as they haven't released a stable public version yet. Everything is RCs. When they do...we will.

Can you find one for 1.1.11?

I guess there are some fixes in the works.

The Apple store has some forum 'readers' that allow one to view SMF forums on an iPhone or iTouch.  I found one called Tapatalk RO.  I have no experience with it, but it appears that forum admins simply load some free software to their server to enable users to run the app.

Any thoughts?  IMO, this seems like a pretty simple solution, though I have no idea how much work would be involved in loading their free software to the DMF server.   [laugh]

FWIW, this forum runs SMF 1.1.8, and they have a mobile version of their forum:

Mobile version:  http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum/index.php?;wap2 (http://www.good-music-guide.com/forum/index.php?;wap2)

I spent some time researching this.

The problem according to the above link is the forum recognizes your iphone as a desktop because it has a full html browser.

Force the mobile version by manually adding the / or ;?wap2 to the end of the url...
and voila...you get the mobile version.

That work for you?

Yes, the "wap2" suffix gies me a text-only version of the DMF site. It's not as elegant as the vBulletin deal, but it works. <shrug>

how do you feel about this?  Am I the only DMFer who has an interest in this?

One tidbit-as I surf around the DMF site, no pictures are visible in this mode. Pages load quite fast, though, and navigation around the site is easy.

I'm not a mobile user, so it's not an issue for me.

You are the only one that has brought it up recently, but I doubt you're the only interested party. I don't see us moving to vbulletin. I do, in the future, see us going to a newer version of SMF.  At that point I would definitely load a mod to allow mobile users the best experience.

As I said earlier, when SMF comes up with a stable public version we'll make the effort to upgrade.

That's fair. I guess I am just happy to have this on your radar. When a new SMF version is ready, please keep us mobile users in mind. [beer]

Overall I prefer the text-only version of SMF mobile site to having to download all the images with the VBulletin mobile site.  When I'm somewhere with a poor signal, or paying roaming charges because I'm outside the US, it's really nice to keep it light on the bandwidth.    I especially like not having to download all the header/banner etc images.

What I would love to see:

- the text-only version provide a link to images/videos that are posted because sometimes I have no idea that there is an image there
- a way to quote
