Title: Front Axle Special Tool # 8000.70139
Post by: WetDuc on April 13, 2010, 07:50:59 AM
So my service manual says I need this special tool.  I understand what it does, it's so the axle doesn't spin when you tighten the nut on the other side.
Do you guys always use this thing, or just support the axle from spinning using a small allen wrench when you tighten?
I saw one for sale in the FS section, and got a $4 price from Ducati Seattle and $10 from the dealership in town.
What say you?  Is it worth it, or not?

I always just stuck an allen key in to keep it from spinning.

I use an allen key, but if it is just $4 I'd just get one and be done with it.
Didn't know they were that cheap.

I was thinking about getting the part, but if the allen key will work, I think I'll just do that.

The allen key can cause the indentations on the axle cut-outs a little bit (I *think* I use a 4.5), and sometimes it pops out if you don't hold it there.  Screwdriver marks it up even more.

If the tool is $4, I'd buy it.

snug down the lower fork clamps on the non-nut side, and torque the axle.

Problem doing it that way?

dunno.  I do the little bit on the left, then a little on the right, then back on the left, right, and so on until I reach torque spec.

I suppose after the axle nut is tight I can relax the bolts and retorque in sequence, but for $4 plus shipping, I'm not messing with the allen wrench anymore.

That's what I do.

This is something like a $5 part and the dealer usually has it in stock.  It makes the whole operation super easy.  I don't like to spend money on specialty tools if I don't need them but this is cheap.

Yea, I got one.  It's real cheap, but isn't completely necessary by any means.
You can't just tighten down the axle nut because the axle will spin on the RH side.  The tool keeps it from spinning.  Once the axle is tight, it's just doing the pinch bolts and brakes then done.
