Title: lower triple clamp bolts torque?
Post by: Bones on April 13, 2010, 03:53:39 PM
anyone know the torque specs for the lower triple bolts on a monster 620 ('02). not in my haynes manual or desmo times manual.

TIA

took me a while to find it in my factory service manual...
it's called the "bottom yoke..." i guess that's the technical name for it..

anyway: Bottom yoke clamp bolt  M8x1.25  20 *  GREASE B In the sequence 1-2-1

20nm x .73756 = 14.7 ft/lbs (i'd round up to 15)....
Doesn't seem like much torque, right? You can add a little if you want ;) I think i incidently torqued mine same as the top triple, which is 24nm, or about 17 ft/lbs

Either way, make sure you grease them as called for. Grease helps even pressure out across the threads, and prevents vibration from rattling anything loose. Grease > loctite.

I'd be a little cautious overtightening them too much - there's quite a few pictures floating around of lower triples cracking opposite the clamp bolts - at least some of them attributed to overtightening. Rounding 14.7 up to 17 ft/lbs is likely to be fine - don't go thinking that means 25 or 30 ft/lbs is better though, even if a high grade 8mm bolt is good to 35ft/lbs or more that doesn't mean the parts you're torquing it into are capable of withstanding those forces (or require anything like those forces to do their job)...

definitely agreed!
like i said the only reason mine are even at 17nm is that i figured they would be the same as the top triple, and didn't bother checking the manual ;)

i always tell myself... self, it's aluminum... don't monster truck it.

fack.. now i'm all paranoid that i over-torqued the bolts and screwed something up... :(

ducati manual says +/- 10%. if you're paranoid, you can back it off and retorque?

I might.. I'm just being paranoid though. It's not like i torqued these things to 30 or 40 ft lbs. They are all under 20, guaranteed... Which is close enough for me i think. I would rather them be a little tight than a little loose... Don't want the forks flopping out on me lol...
