Title: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 14, 2010, 09:42:36 AM Dont ask why, i just feel like i can get away with better forks for a only a few hundred bucks if i sell my old stuff. Anyway....
What do you guys think about the following options... 848 forks + calipers, would take very little work. Monstermash did a nice write up, all i need are 2 spacers, 2 shims, and 1 bored triple, these are 25mm catridges i believe and im not sure if they have hi/lo compression damping. To my understanding the 1098 forks have a larger spacing on the calipers, and i wouldnt be able to use them anyway because id have to swap rotors, and 1098 rotors are 5 bolt not 6. From time to time there are also 50mm forks that will fit right onto my bike on ebay, such as R6, or ZX6 or CBR forks that have 25mm Ohlins catridges. They i think have all the adjustibility and can be had for $500 bucks sometimes. But im unsure of the caliper spacing. Not sure if i would need to run Nissins or if i can throw on 848/M1100S or S4Rs calipers ( i think those are 100mm) Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: corey on April 14, 2010, 10:46:31 AM i think you're opening a huge can of worms... but a tasty can of worms at that.
talk to theo, he's got 1098's on his S4R... Personally, i like to stick inside the Ducati family when it comes to frankensteining a bike together... but that's just me. i say go for it dude.. just don't let anyone dump a truckload of chicken grease on it when you're done... ;D Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 14, 2010, 10:55:07 AM huge can of worms?
it looks simple. heres a mockup monstermash did http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=33175.msg579453;topicseen#msg579453 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=33175.msg579453;topicseen#msg579453) and it wasnt just chicken. :/ Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: pjfa on April 14, 2010, 01:00:58 PM I´ve instaled a 1098 Showa fork (and Speedymoto triple, and Performance Parts clipons, and Marchesini 5 spokes wheel...) on my M696 pjfa edition

thats awesome! looks pretty straight foward to me. looks like what i expected... anything special to note? Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: DRKWNG on April 15, 2010, 12:52:51 AM Get the radial master cylinders if you really want to experience BRAKES! Ask me how I know. ;)
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 03:03:37 AM just wanted to ask this general questions
the Matris F05R catridge kit is a 25mm kit. people have praised it for a while and i coudlnt find anyone who sells it the larger SBK forks are 43mm, what do these 2 numbers refer to? I just sniped some 848 forks on ebay now for the brakes, then calipers, then the machined parts.... Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: crimsoncloak on April 15, 2010, 03:15:35 AM Why not just put an Ohlins UES kit in your stock forks and adjust the springs if needed? There really isn't anything wrong with the stock forks, the valving just isn't very aggressive. There's always 4-pads off of a 749 if you get bored with the stock brakes. And it all fits and looks factory.
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 03:34:27 AM i alreayd have racetech valves in mine.
i just want a better fork in general....and radial brakes. The rebound and compression circuits are suppose to be shared and reduce performance compared to forks with 2 seperate circuits. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 03:33:17 PM just wanted to ask this general questions the Matris F05R catridge kit is a 25mm kit. people have praised it for a while and i coudlnt find anyone who sells it the larger SBK forks are 43mm, what do these 2 numbers refer to? the 25mm is the diameter of the cartridge that inside of the fork tube. the cartridge roughly resembles a car shock. on our inverted forks, the body of the cartridge on the bottom, with the cartridge pumping rod on top. helpful pic (http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x251/seusssandm/Matrisr6jpeg.jpg) you could have always bought from MatrisUSA.com @ full price. [laugh] on the SBK forks you're on your own on that one. it might be the same thing as the matris, but donkey size. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 03:42:36 PM What kind of adjustments are on the 848 forks?
Can anyone explain these terms to me? what does the 43 mean when they describe the Showa 43mm forks? What makes the 20mm and 25mm kit different? WHats in the 848 fork? Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: TAftonomos on April 15, 2010, 03:52:32 PM 1098 forks have same lowers as 848 forks (and 696?). The rotor is 330 on 1098's, and the caliper has a 5mm spacer under it to adjust it outwards.
A LOT of people use 320 mm rotors with the 1098 with great success (borat?). 1098's have the DLC on the bottoms, 848's dont. Internal valving is the same to my knowledge. I have multiple pairs of 1098 and 848 forks at my disposal, so let me know if I can be of help. 1098 mono block calipers + Brembo GP or RCS master = one finger stoppies. It's almost too much...so I've adjusted my RCS to allow a bit lazier braking. The 999r/2v project has the same setup but with axis rotors and more aggressive pads. That thing is going to be scary on the brakes :) L8BRKR is the plate I'm going for :D Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 04:00:14 PM i just had that pic at my finger tips for my forks. i don't think ducati's ever have/had high speed adjustment. i'm probably wrong.
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 04:15:00 PM i dont think so either
how much of an upgrade will i see in fork performance between my racetech showas and the stock 848 forks? it all i need are brake calipers, shims and bored out top triple and im set. but is it worth the hassle. i can always sell these 848 forks... I have buyers remourse Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 04:25:49 PM i'm not poking fun, but don't get so worried. i'm in the same boat as you. i took a shot in the dark and not 100% that the fork i bought will fit easily.
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 04:27:55 PM i'm not poking fun, but don't get so worried. i'm in the same boat as you. i took a shot in the dark and not 100% that the fork i bought will fit easily. yours should be easy. the forks should slip right in. wanna trade? ;D Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 05:23:04 PM i asked like 6 people and only one responded with 50 uppers and 52 lowers. so that's what i not 100% on. the guy i bought them from already had them boxed up. also, i have no idea about axle size, shims, etc,. also it seems nobody has done just a r6 fork swap. that's why i'm not selling my current forks til i iron everything out and have the new stuff on.
i have to kindly pass on the trade. is there a " Overhaulin' " deadline you workin with? :) Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 05:36:10 PM haha, not really. i just dont like my money being tied up in items i cant use.
Id like to have this all sorted out by the end of May. and the easier it is for me to get everything together, the happier i am. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 05:47:28 PM i understand you about money being tied up. after hoarding vw junk for 2yrs+, i'm finally liquidating. it feels good. more fun money. [cheeky]
i know you'll be a lot happier when you have the new fork in your arms and your weiner in the axle slot, or at least try. i know i will. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 15, 2010, 07:16:21 PM :(
" refund from paypal The forks were lost or misplaced I had them in my dads garage he did spring cleaning and now I cant find them. I tried ending the auction but it wouldnt let me. I canceled all bids but somehow yours got through sorry for the misundersatnding" yea right... you just didnt want them go for that much. :-\ Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 15, 2010, 08:43:44 PM i would track his username. what a douchebag. well now i guess you can jap forks now [thumbsup].
sorry about your luck. you know what? do you have his username? i could send him a message asking if the winner(you) backed out/didn't pay. just to see what he says. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Düb Lüv on April 16, 2010, 06:32:06 AM yo He, i had another ebay seller message me back. he too confirmed that they are 50/52mm.
somebody posted in my thread some forks for you. Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: He Man on April 16, 2010, 07:08:38 AM im not going to care to much about him retracting it. i know he wants more out of it and its going be on ebay again soon.
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: jim_0068 on April 16, 2010, 07:46:39 AM i'd report the douche to ebay
Title: Re: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: Monstermash on April 18, 2010, 02:15:48 PM To my understanding the 1098 forks have a larger spacing on the calipers, and i wouldnt be able to use them anyway because id have to swap rotors, and 1098 rotors are 5 bolt not 6. Thats incorrect. The spacing is the same but there are spacers between the caliper and the fork lower on the 1098 to accommodate the larger (330mm) rotors. I used the 1098 forks and calipers on my 996 and just eliminated the spacers and used the Braketech rotors I was using on the bike. Shoot me a pm if you have any questions. Title: Fork Upgrade for S2R1000 Post by: astonieagense on April 19, 2010, 10:09:10 PM hey guys,
ive got a few "older" blackrapid straps at home and was wondering if the fastenr-2 was worth the upgrade over the fastenr-1 ? yes/no? please explain i was looking at the connectr-2 as well, but i dont know if that was is as worth it. thanks for any advice |
