Title: 900 i.e. Front Sprockets
Post by: RAT900 on April 14, 2010, 11:12:10 AM
Is there a distinct difference?

I recall reading somewhere on the errornet

that the front sprockets for the 02 900 i.e. had a different shoulder dimension

than that which was used on nearly every other farking 900 motor.

Is this truth..and yet one more oddball consideration I need to take into account on this odd-duc?
Thanks as always

Yeah, there's a bit of a shoulder thingy on the 900 front sprockets. It's a good 2-3mm so needs to be accounted for

Chris Kelly can tell you for sure, but I think it's just '00 and '01that have the odd ball.  I've got an old one somewhere around here I can take a picture of if you want.

Front sprockets according to Ducati parts catalogues:

'02 M900 - 449.1.043.1A

'01 M900 - 449.1.035.1A

'00 M900 - 449.1.035.1A

As there's no particularly helpful description or picture associated with those part numbers, that's barely $.02.  :P

IIRC....

because that vintage 900 used the same close ratio gearset as the 748...

they also shared the same sprocket.

I'm old and my memory may be failing. ;D

My S4 has that same close ratio 'box, but uses a normal sprocket.

AFAIK, all of the 900ie ran a 170 rear tire on a 5.5 rim.
That would imply that they had a dedicated rear sprocket carrier as well.

My 900 carby came with a 170...

I think all the rear sprocket carriers for the 5.5s were the same.

I guess I don't know why they used an oddball sprocket. :P

S4 carrier            - 160.1.049.1A
'02 M900ie carrier - 160.1.049.1A

'01 M900ie carrier - 160.1.004.1B
'00 M900ie carrier - 160.1.004.1B

The above info would lead one to conclude that:

'00 and '01 M900ie use the oddball front sprocket.
'02 M900ie uses the normal front sprocket.

Reality may blow that all to hell.

That is good info.

The only problem, as you point out, is that in reality do different part numbers actually mean different parts?

Remember 'price controls' in the seventies?

Ford would change part numbers to justify a price increase.

Does Ducati do that to denote a different vendor?

Inquiring minds....

All good questions, for which I only have suspicions for answers.

'00-'02 M750 front sprocket - 449.1.003.3A
Different from any of the '00-'02 M900ie sprocket.
No love there.

another Ducati inspired fandango...

I will take the digital calipers to the sprocket when I get ready to do the chain replace next month

and I will track down this thread and post the dimensional findings

if someone wants to bump them against the "all-other-models" sprocket config

Thanks folks

the 900ie used a front sprocket that had a boss on either side.  they also had red rubber on them too from memory.  some of the 800 used them too - maybe al swingarm 800, i forget now.  ducati superceded it back to the early one from memory.  it was 6mm offset anyway, so you put 6mm of washers between the lock plate and the 33A front sprocket and it's the same pretty much.

33A is the basic 520 15 tooth sprocket used since 89 851 on all 520 chain bikes.  number changed with 620, etc, but they were still the same from memory.  s4 has a 525 chain.

I had to replace my front sprocket on my 2000 M900ie this winter.  It required a special sprocket that I purchased from CA Cycleworks.  Below is a link to the thread I had regarding mine.  I took pictures of the sprocket, so if the PN# matches or the sprocket looks the same as mine, then you are truly special.  I should say that the sprocket has the same spacing on each side.

This is what used to be on my 2001 900S ie

Its the same "shoulder" on the other side.

Its in millimeters

The shoulder "facing" the engine is 4mm and the other side is 3mm
