Ive been riding for 17years, i recent got smart and purchased a 2007 S4RS and love it so far. I have seen a few bike with that ugly canister on the left side removed, what is it and whats involved in removing it.Are there there any issues with check engine lights afterward?? thanks for your replies

It's a SBK, but it's pretty much the same process:

You just need to seal the vacuum nipples in the intake runners.  You can replace the nipples with short 5 mm. screws or cap the nipples.  If I remember right, you will need to remount your horn.  This will not trigger a "check  engine" light on your bike.

Don't know if this helps but:http: [url]http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/ducati-evaporative-emissions//url]

I know that there was a company that actually made a kit for removal.  Think they are called TPO.  Don't know if they make it anymore though.  The most important thing is to seal those holes.  Other than that nothing to worry about really.

Man, I hate that canister...
Just make sure the 2 hoses that run to the intakes are plugged or that you plug the fittings on the intakes themselves.  A vacuum leak at those hoses/fittings will make your bike run lean.
