Title: is this good price for 998?
Post by: masterh on April 18, 2010, 11:06:10 AM
sorry it's not a monster. I was looking for a monster and found this one.
it's from ducati dealer so I guess I shouldn't worry about current condition.
is this good price?

only down side is that, it is race bike. so I have to wear proper gears all the time.
If I ride it with regular clothes, I would look like a douschebag

(when I was riding my monster, I used to wear jeans with shirt and no helmet lol)

Not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at but you should wear some gear no matter what you ride.

whether i am on the GFs monster 696 or my 848 i always wear my helmet, jacket, gloves, sketchers (steel toe boots) and am looking for a good pair of riding pants that fit well.
proper gear is important no matter what you ride.  [moto]

masterh,   you had to know with the gear focus of most folks here and people's need to tell you you're doing something wrong, that this post would do nothing but turn into a giant scolding about gear.

What would help is any actual info about the bike in question so people could give some input as to it's cost.  the cost would help too.  ;D

And I wouldn't assume anything about its condition simply because it's being sold at a dealer.

Especially on an invisible 998

i woudlnt buy it if it was a race bike. you dont know how hard the motors been kicked around.

or do you mean its a motorcycle that just so happens to be a 998? Wear wahtever you want man.

Im not a ATGATT kinda guy and if you think being on a ducati SBK makes you a douche bag if you dont wear the gear then i dont know what to tell you, you have an image problem.

Ill wear proper gear (if i feel like it) if im on a vespa or a 1198R.

thanks for the concerns.

do you think it's a good deal? it could be a track bike because I know they go to ducati race event.
I don't think they will sell the crap bike as a ducati dealer though.

Big miles, but fully serviced, price is nice. Funny; they don't have it listed on the dealer's own site.

Where are you seeing the mileage?

Without knowing that, it seems like a superb price. Good luck, OP.

Thanks. 19k on a Testastretta motor? If the service history is good, that's no problem at all.

The dealer selling it is my dealer.  They do good work and are definitely a reputable shop.  That's a great price, and if my wife didn't think all fully faired sport bikes are ugly, I'd be VERY VERY tempted to buy that.  Great price, for a beautiful, red Ducati Superbike.

+1 on the dealer. I bought my S2R1K from them (new). They have always been great guys to deal with and awesome techs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another bike from them.

If I hadn't just bought the Triumph and weren't looking for a truck to haul the bikes around in I'd pick that up in a heartbeat.  Hope you get it. Enjoy!

yeah I am going to check it out tomorrow.

I think I will just pull out cash after hearing the sound and if they give me little discount.

well I guess at least buying used bike on whim, won't hurt me a lot so...

there is ducati 999 in classified section by forum member.
I like that one as well  [bang]
I think it's comparing old monster to newer style monster
I like the classic look of 998 but I also like newer style of 999 lol

They're OK, but will get you on the service. Figure on about +50% for oral quotes or get it on paper.

Go for it, masterh!

Post by: masterh on April 20, 2010, 01:41:27 PM
yeah I picked it up :)

don't know how long I will keep it though because of its uncomfortable riding position (yeah I am the guy who drives monster with regular clothes around the block just to go to coffee shop etc)

but there was some issue. the coolant sprayed little bit. I will take it to the shop to see what's going on

I am kinda disappointed by the sound. it has termis.
my 01 m900 monster had arrow muffler. when I go over 7k rpm, the sound changes from growling to screaming (high pitch sound like ferrari) but I don't hear that from 998 :(

They are uncomfortable.  I didn't care for my 998 around town either.  So I turned it into a track bike.

Definitely get the coolant issue worked out.  Was the weather very hot when you rode it?  How hot did the engine temp get?  Did the radiator fans come on?  Could the coolant reservoir just be too full?

yeah he said it might be just full. it was little hot outside. the temp was reaching 220~230 when I was riding around the town. the fan kicked on after I turned the key off.
I am sure they will take care of that
