Title: DSS swap? early to late
Post by: Düb Lüv on April 18, 2010, 08:54:46 PM
i haven't found any information about somebody doing the swap, only people stating the differences. the style of dss i'm talking about is with the ride height adjuster rod.

i really love the profile with this suspension. no i simply won't just buy a new monster.

st-based swingarm. that's what i was trying to say. swapping the hoop suspension for the st-based.

ANYTHING can be done, but this mod...

Well, even I wouldn't try it...  & I'm the guy who dry-clutched a 750.

thanks stew for your reply. i was able to pull up the part catalog PDF's for the 851 and st-based frame and finally found the BIG difference. the pivoting arms mounts are totally different and in different locations.

i believe if i were to do a suspension mounting mod, i would do something like you did STEW, but use the DSS.My only concern would be that, would having the shock all the way forward and, w/o pivoting arm, effect the leverage of shock? not allowing to work or function proberly?

here's the 851/888 based frame whatever you like to call it ( older style w/hoop )

here's the ST-based frame ( newer style w/o hoop )

take note of the pivot mounting locations.

Isn't DDS the Ducati Data System?

The stock monster shock would be valved and sprung incorrectly for that mounting.

Stew will correct me if I'm wrong, but a Supersport or 696 shock would be a better choice, IMO, as that is it's mounting.

D@mn it! i just noticed i thread misspelling.

on the shock i would definitely use an aftermarket shock. that would probably be my next purchase.

if i were going to change the shock mounting, how would i pick out a shock?

I very much like the hoop now that it is less common. Just see it and think: 851/888 Racing heritage.

Please be advised that if you do decide to convert your Monster frame to an SS rear suspension, you WILL have to clearance the sump area of your fuel tank a lot to clear the upper shock mount.

And there's already a lack of room there anyhow on the external fuel filter (carbie) bikes

i think i'm just going to hang up the thought of mess with the rear shock mounting. i'm going to have my hands a little full with my new fork swap.
