How would one go about prepping a Chrome surface for paint. The ultimate goal will be a flat black finish.
Thanks in advance!
I hope you aren't planning on painting the chrome tank in your avatar?
thats what im saying. if its some other piece of chromed part, i would say wahtever, but dont say its the tank!!!!
LOL, thats crazy talk!
No, my son found a perfectly good bicycle in the trash that we are going to turn in to a flat black "Rat Bike". His first project bike!
phew!!!
if the chrome isnt flaking off, im no painter, but if you give it a nice scuff, and throw on an adhesion promoter before your primer, you should be fine. if it is, then take a metal chisel and scrap it off if you can.
again <- not a painter, but i spray painted some bicycle rims like that once.
Scuff with 600 or 300? Ill be using Krylon Flat Black Primer....

Come on Ducpainter, share your knowledge with all of us.
I've sandblasted chrome parts and then used regular urethane primer & paint before. It held up well. YMMV

Seems like you already know how... ;D
I prefer epoxy primers for adhesion under urethanes, but your method is sound as long as the primer is recommended for direct to metal. [thumbsup]
Nate can you post a how-to? There's a low mileage undented chromo I've been seeing for sale that would look killer in flat black.

And it can be yours for a mere $15,000!
I think it would make a wonderful barfday present to yourself!
