Title: Mosby's Revenge ride, Sunday, May 2
Post by: tuanogus on April 23, 2010, 03:55:21 AM
I have a route the winds through the northern foothills of VA. I call it Mosby's Revenge, and it takes us through some of the most scenic areas of VA north of I66. Weather permitting, I'll be leaving Arlington late morning on Sunday, May 2. I typically stop in Upperville and Bluemont, but am open to other ideas. Let me know if you're interested and I'll figure out a place for us to meet.

Riders of all levels welcome. Plan for 250 +/- miles and a fuel stop at 125. We will nurse our broken butts at Rocklands or Rhodeside afterward.

General route:
Arlington -> Great Falls
Great Falls -> Bluemont
Bluemont -> Middleburg
Middleburg -> The Plains
The Plains -> Upperville
Upperville -> Arlington

---- UPDATE #1 ----
We're meeting at 10:30 am, in the parking lot outside of Thirsty Bernie, at the intersection of N. Glebe (Rt 120) and Lee Hwy (Rt 29) in north Arlington. We'll get on the road at 11:00 am sharp. There are a few gas stations at this intersection, as well as fast food nearby.

---- UPDATE #2 ----
I mapped the route from Arlington to Middleburg (here). I will try to get the rest of the ride mapped before Sunday.

---- UPDATE #3 ----
I've got an updated map (here (http://bit.ly/a1fz3p)) of the route. I've shortened the ride a bit as there's a 40% chance of t-storms in the evening. Plus we'll be stopping for fuel, food, and drink along the way. I'm looking for suggestions on the final leg from Centreville to Arlington, otherwise we'll "feel" our way back.

---- UPDATE #4 ----
I'm still planning to ride today, despite the occasional sprinkle. We should stay dry and I'll keep an eye on the radar as we ride. I've also shortened the route by 30 miles out west so we can start heading east a bit earlier. I'd like for us to meet at Rhodeside after the ride if the rain holds off.

---- UPDATE #5 ----
Last and final update includes the final route taken (here (http://bit.ly/bMvscY)). We took I66 east after the final marker (H). Lesson learned: avoid Leeds Manor Rd (marker C) unless you have a good reason to be up there.

I'd be interested if I wasn't going to be MotoCrewing the Avon Breast Cancer Walk through the DC Area over the course of the weekend.

What's the pace like on this ride?

I'd love to be able to meet ya'll in Bluemont. My big concern is I only get 110 miles on 3.5 gallons of gas. I'm 10 - 15 miles east of Middleburg so I could be there also. Any idea of times @ Bluemont or Middleburg?

Well, the ride open to all skill levels. I was going to decide on the pace after surveying the folks who show up. The goal of the ride, for me, is to get everyone home safe. If everyone wants a "spirited" ride, then we'll have one. But I don't want anyone trying to keep up and getting hurt.

Hey, we can work in more fuel stops to accommodate you! I'm going to aim for first stop at Bluemont General Store, at 12:30 +/-, if you want to meet us there. We'll stretch, snack, drink for 20-30 minutes. From there we'll head down Snickersville Turnpike (734), and turn west on Rt 50 towards Middleburg. My wild ass guess for time at Middleburg is 1:45'ish. We'll stop for gas there (I think there's just the one station at the east end of the village).

If folks want to stop for lunch in Middleburg, we'll do that and adjust the route a bit.

Tentatively in. My wife is dragging my sorry @$$ to a party the night before. But I should be able to make it in time.

I plan to be there.  My carbie is getting about 110 as well.  I dont mind a middle of the road ride not spirited but not slug either.  None the less I will ride.   As with most rides I have done.  No one gets left behind regardless of the pace and what ever pace you choose should be one you are MOST comfortable with on your bike.  dc

Another bump. See update #2 for a map of the Arlington -> Middleburg route. I'll try to map out the rest of the ride today/tomorrow.

I'm interested, but it's about a 50:50 chance at this time.  Other priorities and weather are the key drivers for me.  Latest forecast I saw indicated a strong chance of showers/T-storms on Sunday afternoon.

It's probably out of the question, but any consideration given to moving the ride to Saturday?  I'm aware it conflicts with the Gold Cup and potentially with Statler's gig which is set for the evening, but a ride ride on Saturday would up my chances to make it.

For some reason I had it in my head that this was Sat.. even though it plainly says SUNDAY.  I was planning to ride that day, and this might just suit the bill :)

I'll post up my solid in or out status when I figure it :)  I'd probably intercept G-Town Pike and Linganore. Since I don't think we've met - look for a 900S with all manner of carbon gizzys on it and a Checker Flag tank. That'll be me

1. Ya, yuu, we'll pick you up! BTW, we met (once) at Rhodeside last year'ish. I was a quiet stranger on a new 696.

2. And, jetpuff716, you're right, I didn't want to interfere with Statler's party on Saturday. For those of you attending, have fun! As for the weather I'll do my best to keep us ahead of any storm.

3. For everyone: I plan to get the maps done tomorrow. I'll do a sanity check on the weather, too.

Ah, very good. Was this before or after I exploded my knee?

Either way I'm planning to intercept you as noted before (unless it's weather doom!). Unless there's some jerk-wad cager tailgating the last bike, I'll plan to just hop on the tail of the pack as it rolls by.

Bluemont General store about 12:30 sounds good to me. I'll get there early.
Looks like a good ride. See you there

Another (last?) bump, as I've got most of the route mapped now. Check the OP, update 3, for the rest.

bdub, although I've changed the route, we'll still pick you up at 12:30'ish in Bluemont.

Interesting route, kinds late for me to be giving you some alternatives and I don't post on forums anyway, just a couple of thoughts for you. You might consider taking Rt. 28  South to Rt. 606 to Evergreen Mills Rd, instead of Rt. 7 out to leesburg. Snickersville Tnpk is in pretty bad shape, your first section of Leeds Manor as well, and I assume you know that the first section of Mountain Rd is gravel. -  :) - Gene

Post by: tuanogus on May 01, 2010, 11:26:38 AM
Thanks for the heads-up, Gene. I road Snickers today and it seems fine for our pace. I think they've patched the road since my last trip out there. Leeds is always a little dicey, but it's beautiful. We'll take it slow and enjoy the scenery. I am really trying to change up the ride every 15-30 miles to keep it interesting.

I will be making some minor adjustments to the route this evening. I'll try to get the latest map posted before midnight, and we'll go over it before the ride tomorrow.

I'll plan to be there. One option at the end would be through Clifton and Henderson Road.

See you all at 10:30! I'm sorry you can't make it, DC. Next time.

Just a quick note: I've shortened the route out west by ~30 miles so we can head east a bit earlier. We should stay dry for the ride, and I'll check radar at our stops.

We'll try to meet up at Rhodeside after the ride.

NP, Cagey. I forgot about that snake. Thanks to everyone for making the ride. Sorry 'bout the scratchy ride up Leeds Manor... I thought the views would be worth it, but I think I'll skip it in the future.

BTW, I did a final update to the OP with a map of our route.

Thanks again for organizing, we need to do this more often. I'll be posting here once I start organizing rides in MoCo once again.

And finally here's a pic of you fellas, so you don't need to be sitting on your bikes for me to recognize you  ;)
