Title: 2006 620 with 695 ECU
Post by: randykyra on April 26, 2010, 03:40:27 PM
OK,  I picked up a 620 from a guy who bought it as a salvage bike from Copart.com.  The bike really didn't have any damage other then a few small things (blinker, footpeg and handle bars).  When he got the bike it only had one key (Black). Well, a short time later it stopped running, no red key so must have be the immobilizer.  He goes out and buy a lock set that includes the gauges, ecu, both original black keys and the red key from a 695 at a tune $1400.  He installs all of it and the bike starts up and runs well.  He decides to sell the bike so this is where I come in.  I buy the bike but I have some questions.  The yellow check engine light is on. The last owner said it came on as soon as he started the bike with the 695 stuff installed. I've only had the bike 2 days and I haven't taken it to the dealer to pull codes.
When it runs it smells to me that the bike is running rich.  I did some checking and is it true the 695 uses a O2 sensor?  Could this be why it appears to be running rich?  If it is the O2 sensor or lack there of causing my issues what can I do to fix it. Can I run the bike this way with the 695 stuff on it and not worry about it . Also,  I have all the original stuff he took off and replaced with the 695 stuff. I figured worse case is I have the Immobilizer inactivated and reinstall all the old stuff and sell the 695 stuff and maybe have enough for slipons.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

Yes, the 695 has an O2 sensor.  The check engine light might be on because of no sensor input.  Some would do this, some would not.  Either way, it is unlikely the 695 and the 620 would run the same map.

As I understand it the Map for the 695 could possible be an improvement for the 620.  I just got the Bike and Time hasn't allowed me the chance to really ride it yet.  But i hope to tonight or tomorrow and I'll let all of you know.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on the rest of my post.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't have the O2 sensor on there it's going to run in a default over rich mode.  That dumps lots more gas in but is not likely an improvement for a 620, it's probably just to rich.  You can do a lot to try to get it working right but here's what I suggest...

I think there are a few people on this board who can disable the immobilizer on the original 620 gear for around $200.  Then you can re-install the original 620 gear, get the bike running right, and sell the matched 695 set.  Most people are looking at spending $1400 or more like the previous owner did.  I'm sure you could sell it for less and move it fast.  Take the money from the 695 set and buy a PC3 or whatever else your little heart desires for your new 620.

You can do things like get an O2 bung put into your 620 pipes, hook up the sensor, and get a PC3 or similar with a custom map to make the 695 unit 'fit' the 620 engine, but going the way above gives you pocket cash to burn once you sell the 695 gear.

PC3 will not work with the 695 ecu in its stock form. The oxygen sensor input will just override whatever changes the pc is trying to make. I agree with the last post...you should have your stock 620 ecu reflashed with the ducati performance map and have the immobilizer removed. The 695 engine breaths so much better than a 620, the maps will never match up.

Thanks Scott that's what I was thinking.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to someone that might be able to help with the immobilizer?

ducatidepot.com can get you a new ecu with no immobilizer and whatever map you want, or pm monstermash, he can do the same.

accrocker,
I've spoken to Monstermash and it sounds like he's not interested in doing it.  He's saying he's had issues with the 600 series  monster's and would perfer to say away.  He also recommended Ducati depot so that's who I'll go with.

On a side note:
I road the bike last night and it's surging a lot and running really rich.  So,  I need to get the ECU right from my old stuff.  Hopefully Ducati depot can get me up and running soon.

update:

I guess monstermash and me had a miscommunication.  He's having me try a couple of things with the 695 ECU to see if it corrects the problem.  I'll let you guys know how it works out.   :)

Well tried a couple of things suggested by monstermash but still having the same issues.  I've decided to have the old ECU flashed and the DP map installed. I'll have the immobilizer inactivated also.  I hope to have it back to me by the weekend.  I'll let you guys know how it works out.
Hopefully I'll have a Complete 695 lockset, gauges, ECU, 2 black keys and red along with the key card forsale soon after I install the old stuff.  I'll cut a good deal if anyone is interested. So, keep it in mind. [wine]

Well all,
Just got the 620 ECU back from having it reflashed with the DP map. I also had the immobilizer inactivated.   I put a set of FBF carbon fiber slipons on the bike along with a slight airbox modification. I unplugged the 695 ECU, plugged in the reflashed 620 ECU and the bike started right up.  I let it warm up a little and took it our for a run.  The bike had a slight stumble around 6500 RPM's but after a short distance it went away and now it runs like a top. Man, the exhaust sound Great!  A major difference of the stock can's.  I forgot the real sound of ducati. What a sweet sound...
There was no need to switch out anything else, just the ecu's. At this time I'm still running the 695 gauges. I'll pull all the 695 stuff later and sell the complete set (ecu, locks, gauges, red and black keys along with the key card) on eBay, I guess.  But for right now I'm going to enjoy my new toy.  Here's couple of pic's
Oh, DESMOPORSCHE did the reflash. $260 shipped.  I'm very happy with the service and turn around time. They got it on Monday and I had it back on the bike Friday.

Glad to hear it worked out.  BTW, looks like the front of your seat is not clipped in.

Wow, makes me want to get my immobilizer nuked just so I can clean up the front end with one of those slick little gauges.

Great observation on the seat. It wasn't secured correctly.
