Title: Best way to chain lock a 696? Post by: ducleaner on April 26, 2010, 07:58:26 PM I've got a rather thick chain lock and I can't see any way to run it through the frame of my 696. Is anyone else able to do this? Can you share your technique?
Barring that, is it better to run the lock through the front or rear wheel? Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? Post by: desmoquattro on April 27, 2010, 03:18:25 AM I don't think the choice of wheel matters...if a thief wants your ride bad enough, they're going to get it. That said, I think locking the rear is probably slightly better: more crap to disconnect to get to it, and it'll be harder to move around without a rear wheel.

YMMV. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? Did it myself a few times...without the falling over part. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? It's a 16lb chain with an enormous yellow lock so it's kinda hard to miss. Also it's for home use only so it should become a habit pretty fast. I don't have a garage to keep it in so this is the next best thing. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? I love Ducatis but the RSV4 Factory is my next bike. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? Post by: ducleaner on April 27, 2010, 04:19:51 PM Nobody'd steal it because the motor would just blow up ;D Yeah, it would explode ~14,000 times per minute. And make some pretty sexy music doing it. :P All kidding aside, have you noticed that people rarely make digs on products that are cheaper than what they own? Ferrari guys don't waste their time talking sh** about Porsches. Porsche guys don't waste their time talking sh** about Hondas, etc. It's always the other way around. GSXR guys talk sh** about Ducatis. Ducati guys talk sh** about RSV4s. It's an ego thing. Not for me though. I think my bike is fine but I'd like to add an 848, an S1000RR, and an RSV4 before too long. They're all dead sexy IMO. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? MSRP $20,999 So by your logic the RSV4 guys should be talking smack about Ducati ;D It's not an ego thing...it's a recall thing (http://www.motorcycle.com/news/aprilia-rsv4-recall-due-to-faulty-conrods-89173.html). First model year, Aprilia's first non-Rotax motor in many years, and very small production runs...something like this was bound to happen. I was seriously considering the RSV4 Factory. It's a fantastic-looking bike, and the V-4 is extremely tempting. But the recall and the first-model-year factor drove me right back to the Duc. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? Post by: duqette on May 03, 2010, 06:16:54 AM I chain mine to the carport. I run the chain through the back wheel. However, I advise caution and care when threading the chain; it will scratch your wheel.
Don't ask me how I know this. [bang] My neighbor's bike got jacked, mine is still there. 'Nuff said. Once or twice I've unlocked it and then gotten distracted and neglected to remove the chain. I start to back the bike out, the chain prevents the wheel from turning. I think, "You idiot!" to myself, carefully lift / pull the chain out (without letting it touch the wheel), and I'm on my merry way. Title: Re: Best way to chain lock a 696? Well since you don't have a garage you are welcome to store your ever expanding stable of bikes at my place. Just leave the keys and I'll make sure they are well taken care of. Post by: bigiain on May 04, 2010, 09:46:22 PM Nobody'd steal it because the motor would just blow up ;D Yeah, but think how secure it'll be when you feed the chain thru the hole the conrod made in the crankcase! You could loop the chain round the crank! That's _never_ gonna get stolen! [laugh] big |
