Title: Moving 'cross country, looking for comfy sofas to crash on.
Post by: DRKWNG on April 28, 2010, 07:37:24 AM
As some of you might know, I will be moving from Hawaii to Washington DC in just about a month's time.  I had a hell of a time finding a property in the DC area that would allow me to bring my dog (dreaded, vicious Doberman) but I finally found a decent place.  Now I am going through the process of getting the move all planned out.  The military will fund my flight from here to there, but I am not ok with the idea of transporting my dog in the cargo hold of the aircraft for that length of time.  So with that in mind, I will most likely be flying into Denver, renting a car (on the first of June) and making the drive to Northern Virginia from there.  Now comes the fun part: I know a few people through work in the St. Louis area that I will probably try to stay the night with, but was curious if maybe any fellow DMFers would be able to offer a viable plan B on the chance that my friends aren't around.  Any help would be HUGELY appreciated and I would be more than happy to fund your  [drink] and  [bacon] for the week to pay for your hospitality.  ;)

You and your pooch will always have a place to crash in Denver (and Randimus and I aren't too far from the airport).  If your friends in St. Louie can't put you up, I'll tell my brother that he has to help.   ;)

Good luck with the transition!

I'll have to check with the wifey, but if you come across on 70 through Columbus, Ohio, we could probably accommodate you if you are at a stopping point for the day.

If we had just Greta, I'd be perfectly fine with it, however, now throw puppy in and my wife's sister (who acts 12) living with us, it might be more difficult, but we will do anything possible to help you out.

A month is a while with our pooch, so he should be adjusted by then and we should be able to make it work.

Metallimonster also lives in Columbus, but can't vouch for his living situation or if he can accommodate you, but he is a dog lover  [thumbsup]

If you do decide Columbus will be a stop on your journey, we can also go to our local board (desmohio.com) and I am sure someone will be able to let you crash at their house.

we are a good group, regardless of what they say  ;D

Unless you are looking to go see your friends the drive from Denver to D.C. is a striaght shot. Just take 70 E until Frderick MD then take 270 S to D.C.  [thumbsup]

Guess he will be cruising through Columbus.

Not sure how far you drive in a day but St Louis to Indianapolis is 6hrs and Indy to Columbus is 3, so if you are in for a 9hr day or around there.......Columbus is your night stop.

Well, things became even more complicated today.  Due to the way the Air Force transportation office works, it now looks like I will be flying into LA and renting a car from there.  Good god that is going to be one hell of a road trip!!

Wife and I talked.

You and your pooch have a home, food, and beer in Columbus if you stop over for the night.

You'll be in the finished part of our basement on an air mattress with sheets, blankets, pillows, etc.

If you are lucky, you might get turn down service and a mint.

Wait...

doesn't the AIR Force have a plane that will make it to DC?

They sure do.  But moving the dog 'cross country complicates things.

That was my original idea, but PetAirways will not have any available flights leaving the LA area until mid way through July, and there is no way that I will be able to hang around that long...

Good luck on the move...

although Hawaii to DC seems like a dubious geographic trajectory

but then sometimes careers demand hell-tours

70 is your quickest route across the country.

or

maybe there is some highway that runs straight across the southern states? I have no idea, no map in front of me and never been to Texas, AZ, NM, etc.

either or, I live 7mi north of 70 off 270.

Just give me a days notice or so.

Looks like I-40 is going to be the most direct route to take, so I will probably go that way.  Now with that said, anyone in either Albuquerque, Little Rock and or Knoxville feel like offering me a spot on the couch?  ;)

Post up in the NMMR local board if you haven't already. When Mother and I went across the country, we stayed with ducducgooseme in ABQ. I'm sure someone will put you up.

We drove 12+ hours each day and made it in 4 days from Charlotte, NC to Portland, OR via I-40. With a pup, that might be a little harder. We didn't see anyone other than Shadowchaser before ABQ, maybe posting in the local boards for those areas will help?

My Pops live in Nashville, if you're heading through there, I'll check with him. He's got plenty of space, and a basement where Dharma can torment their cat and 3 other dogs (husky/chow mix)

Hey DRKWNG, how are you going about transporting your bikes?

I'm shipping the Duc with Federal/Allied and letting Uncle Sam move the KTM for me.

Thanks!!  Not sure if you know what you are getting yourself into though.  Do you think the town will survive Darmah and Kole together?  Have the neighbors been warned?  ;)
