I'm wondering if a separate board for travelers would be a good idea? Members who need a place to crash for a night or just meet up with fellow DMF'ers for drink while they're passing through town. Thought about this before but Stu's thread and now Darkwing's brought it to mind again.
I know it's just as easy to post up threads in NMC or the local boards but this could also be used to keep travel routes, etc through states or across country by car/bike. We could possibly post a list..even a quick-reference map with members locations (within the general vicinity) who have a spare room/bed for would-be travelers. The traveler could also just look at the map and shoot members PM's.
Anyway, my place..well, every other one but the current townhome we're staying in..typically has an extra bedroom/bed anytime a DMF'er is visiting. That doesn't mean we currently don't have a couch and a nutritious breakfast for anyone passing through PHX in the near future! [cheeky] [bacon]
Any other thoughts/ideas in which the board could be utilized?
I think that is a good idea, just not sure people would go there first before posting in here.
I do like your thought process though, it is helpful.
I've stayed with many of people I've met off Ducati Forums.
Kind of creepy if you think about it........
hell, motogpfan flew up here for a weekend to hang out and I'd only met him once before for a few hours.
you get mints on the pillows and beers in the garage at our house ;D

Though I dont currently have an extra bedroom, I am always willing to help out anyway I can. Although I dont know why anyone would actually travel to Utah. (except for the WSBK races.) [laugh]
I have stayed at a bunch of DMF'rs houses on a drive across the country. It worked out well and I would be willing to put some people up if they were in my area.
Hell I have even slept on the floor of a buddy's house and he hadn't even moved in yet!
The problem I see is this: who is going to regularly check a board just to see if someone may be passing through town. People will post travel plans and get almost no responses.
The better bet is for travelers to post up in the local boards where there is less traffic than NMC. You'd be hitting your target audience without getting your thread lost in an avalanche of pictures of cyrus' dogs.
That is all.

Sticky thread in NMC then just under Pay it Forward and Please Read with the map I mentioned?
Just throwing out ideas.

I think that would work a lot better than a separate board. ROAD TRIP thread!!

Yes, offering constructive criticism is such a downer.

however it would best work it is a great idea. i am always open to putting a pillow on a couch, a beer in the garage or <shudder> a mint on a pillow. if you are ever in Toronto that is.
but, it would be cool to know who/where is amenable to this for those times when you want to hit the road and have no particular destination in mind, no? might make for some interestingly random trips...

Methinks IZ is about to move again and is just looking for favorable routes across the country to choose from.

I love your garage too... It has fun toys in it... [evil]
I seem to recall an old thread listing member locations along with available aids to wayward travelers like extra garage space, couch, tools, pick-up truck, etc. Can't remember if that was ToB or a different forum.
On a somewhat related note. I recently started working at a hotel and found that you should always call a hotel to double check any prices that you get online. Like say you get a room at a Days Inn from Orbitz at rate X. Call the Days Inn and see what that room actually costs. It ain't always cheaper online.
the rule is that you need to write a 20+ page epic writeup of your trip if you want people to host you passing through ;)
on that note, El Mat and I found some great hosts last summer just by posting up on the local boards, although some locals are much more active than others. Ours here in Houston kind of fails. No one comes to visit us....I wonder if all these endless straight highways have anything to do with that...
Just be careful when passing through Ft. Myers, Florida.

this is great advice!!
So who has a comfy sofa for me and my dog to crash on in Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City or Little Rock during the first week of June? ;)
If you end up coming further north through Utah, You've got a place.

I-40 route (66) right there! I used to live on Rt. 66 in Flagstaff. I can't believe it was 13 years ago! It's a long 4 hour stretch between Flag and ALBQ! Whatever you do..don't stop any longer than you have to in Gallup!!
BTW..if you have to stop in/around ALBQ overnight, try to get to the East side so you aren't caught in rushhour.
I'm game, I got a spare bedroom with a bed and a ceiling fan. I'm really really close to Firebird Raceway and the 10 frwy.
