so ... took the tank off.. took it to the paint/body guy .. he fixed it. looks great. I put it on the bike, put some gas in it. Drive 6-7 miles... about half a mile from my house it dies... kind of sputters out.
I cranked it while in first, and it rolled forward with force... so I'm assuming compression is good.
Pulled out a spark plug, (kept it wired) and held it against the engine ... spark was good. plugs are good (white tips).
lifted up the tank and pulled the hoses from the main and the return side of the tank... both flowing fuel no problem
all fuses good..
so in conclusion, this is what I am assuming.
Paint guy got contaminants in the tank (im guessing when he was wetsanding). Contaminants are now clogging up the fuel injector. To fix, I will need to pull the fuel injectors and clean them.
What say you? Any other suggestions?
thanks in advance
Sounds like the tank venting is compromised.
Most likely the internal hardline (from the rubber nipple in the filler cavity down to the bottom of the tank) is plugged.
Could be the cap, the vent passages in it are quite small.
There's a plastic mesh fuel pickup strainer and fuel filter inside the tank.
Possibly those are plugged, but not likely IMO.
Least likely is plugged injectors.
thanks for the info.
So I popped off the filler.
The bottom hose on the fuel filter was just sitting in the tank. So the filter had a hose clamped on the top, but nothing on the bottom. There was no clamp on the hose either. So I pushed it back on, put the filler back on and started the bike. I ran for a few seconds then died again. I haven't opened the filler to look again. I need to get a clamp first for the hose.
