Title: S2R800 vs. 696 in straight up race?
Post by: High_Side on May 02, 2010, 03:58:25 PM
Has anyone squared off an S2R800 with a 696 with a similar sized rider aboard?  The reason I ask is we just picked up a 696 and are selling the 800 but the wife feels that the 696 might not have as much go.  We would do it ourselves if we hadn't taken the insurance off of the S2R to put on to the new ride.

And yes, we are still breaking it in so I would expect things will loosen up.  She also can't rev it beyond 5500rpm yet so it's just an initial impression.  Overall we are really satisfied with the new Monster so far, so this is just a curiosity question more than anything else....

I'd think that what she's feeling is pretty accurate. The 696 makes more power, but at a higher RPM.

Switch to 14T at first scheduled maintenance. [thumbsup]

Shouldn't you have figured this out before you bought the 696?

+1

All the fun begins at 6K

It wouldn't have factored in to the decision either way.  As it was her old S2R had been lowered severely so she can touch the ground.  This has led to clearance issues and her wiping the exhaust off of it twice (once, 1000km away from home in the rain....).  The 696 fits her as it comes stock, and with the high routing of the exhaust clearance is not an issue.

I knew that they should be close, and my impression from riding the 696 demo when they first came out is that it might be a little faster, but I have never heard of a direct comparison to the S2R800.

The S2R still has a bit more torque, and at much lower RPM, so she may be feeling a slight difference because of that, exacerbated by the not-yet-broken in 696 engine.

S2R: 7.4 kgm @ 6500
696: 7.0 kgm @ 7750

let me see here...torque generated by larger reciprocating mass?!?!?!?...makes sense as to why the 800 might feel like it has more ass behind it than the 696 to me.

mass is the same size (66mm), it's just the time of flight (stroke) that's different  ;D

change the sprocket to 14t, and then wait for the fun to kick in above 6k rpm.
trust me it's night and day.

I just had the 600 mile service done on my 696 a few weeks ago.  Just for fun, I decided to crack the throttle real hard for the first time because I hadn't taken it over the 6k rpm mark yet.  Bear in mind that I have the 14t front sprocket mod, as well as Termis w/ECU and air filter, but the bike took off like a rocket.  I was watching the Tach only and when I went to shift into third I glanced down at the Speedo for the first time and was going 66 mph in second gear.  The speed limit was 45 mph.  I think that was the first time I have ever braked and up-shifted at the same time.

yup!  I'd like to see what the DP ECU looks like.  I'm betting that it looks a hell of a lot smoother, not to mention more power everywhere.
