So its time to get this mess taken care of, I wish I would have done it when it was cold outside, (I live in texas, so our cold isn't really cold).  But anyway, I wanna pull the wiring harness out completely and start over. I will reuse the stock harness obviously, however, as you can see in the pics its just one big unorganized mess.  I know the point of a naked bike is being able to see the wires and the engine, its just too unorganized for my liking.  So what I want to do is cover everything up with steel braided hoses and heat shrink, and hide everything possible to make it look organized and pre-meditated.  Lets face it, the wiring on this thing was NOT premeditated.

A few other things:

The only thing I have been told is that it is easier routing the main harness on the left side of the bike instead of the right side and it works out better, however I don't know if that is true.

Is it possible to thread any of the main harness through the frame? Or is that not something you wanna do?

On a ten scale my mechanical ability is about a 6 or 7, I feel like this should be pretty straightforward, pull the harness out, get creative, and put stuff back where it goes, but is this something i should just pay my local shop to do?

And yes I have utilized the search box but didn't find much of anything regarding a "how to completely rewire your monster" thread, so for people who have embarked on this journey before, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

no idea, i plan on doing it when i drop my engine for a paint job in a few weeks.

Juans monster is probably my favorite monster of all monsters on this forum. Its basic, very simple mods that make the bike look awesome.

I'd like to do this as well. If anyone has pics of the process that would be fantastic!

Question:  Will you be retaining the stock air-box?

Make dummy test wires out of string.

 onece you are happy they will fit mark lengths on a piece of flat board like mdf .

Then using the actual wires you will use cut the lengths using the marks on the board to get them the correct legth.

This is alot easier than feeding wire through the frame or indeed using the string as a cutting guide.

Oh, and BTW...  I wouldn't run the wiring actually through the frame if it were me.  The HD boys can get away with it (I guess) because they use larger diameter and thicker wall tubing for the frame.

You can 'move' some things without chopping into the wiring harness at all.

I plan on keeping the stock airbox for now duck-stew but only for a while until I do the pod filters and jet kit.

I suggest mailing your bike to Duck-Stew look at his website ;)

That would be exactly what I want duck poultry. Unfortunately that would be more than I would want to spend. Getting my bike from Texas to California and back, and then pay him to do the Work also. Looks like what I should do is find someone who can do the same thing here in my neck of the woods.  Or just do it myself and learn all kinds of new stuff in the process.

What part of Texas? I'm in Dallas. This is stuff we could make a bit of progress on (note: i'm no professional)

Well you are in good hands locally - My 900 is a 1999, and Marty at AMS just picked up a 98 900 - all have the same wiring.

What differences might there be? They are both carbed, and 3-phase charging systems

The wires going from the stator to the regulator were specified too short in '98 so there's a 7 inch jumper harness that extends the wires from the stator to the regulator.  That and I think the charging fuse holders were different...


I was just bustin' your chops a little...  You're right, they're both the same (or close enough...)

ha, ok. I was thinking - what could I have overlooked?! And kept going over the systems in my head and trying to imagine where they might be different.
