Title: SMRI needs corner workers.....
Post by: Cloner on May 05, 2010, 11:21:59 AM
....and Evelyn (the Chief Corner Marshal for SMRI) is asking for your help!  If you'd like the best seat in the house for a track day or a race, then you should volunteer as a corner marshal.  We typically try to move folks around during the day (especially at track days where it's easier to get bored) so you'll often get to see a couple of the more technical turns at the track, and you get a front row seat for all the action.  Also, once you have a little experience and can work alone or supervise a second "helper" there's a small stipend for your efforts!

The next SMRI trackday is Sunday, May 16th (where I'll be the Chief Corner Marshal....Evelyn has a prior engagement) and the next race is Sunday, May 23rd (not Memorial Day Weekend as I told Bonfy earlier).

If you're interested you can email Evelyn at blowback6@aol.com.  Volunteerism is GREATLY appreciated.

This note showed up in my inbox this morning from Evelyn Watkins, SMRI's chief corner marshal:

Quote
Good afternoon!!!

For the first time since I've been chief corner marshal, I've not hear from more than two people for working at an SMRI event.

The next Race Day is Sunday June 27th.  So far we have a Starter, me, and one person for the afternoon.

Can we run the race that way?  Not really.  We definitely need someone for Pit Out and it would be nice to have a marshal (or two) on turns 1, 3, and 5.  (Pit In would be nice too.)   Otherwise, if an incident occurs during a practice or race, the only alternative is to stop the session  -- RED FLAG.    That makes for a very long day and very unhappy racers.

If you and/or a friend can help out on Sunday June 27th, please give me a call at 301-6717 (cell) or send me an email as soon as possible.  (We do offer paid compensation, even to inexperienced volunteers.)

Evelyn

If any of you would like to volunteer, I'm sure Evelyn would love to hear from you.  You get the best view of the action and you earn a couple of bucks for your trouble.  Ask DM and PC, they'll tell you what it's about!  If you decide to volunteer, don't wear red or yellow, but wear plenty of sunscreen.

Thanks,

S

Do you have to be certified to be a corner marshall?

Negative, Ghostrider.  You just have to be willing to sit in the heat for a day and not laugh too loud whenever an idiot bins his bike in your corner.  Typically we try to stick new folks with experienced folks for an event or two to get them comfortable if possible.  It's easy to get too excited during that first episode.   ;)

It is a decent way to get involved at the track if you want to ease your way into it, too.

Aye! Skipper. Sounds painful, thanks for the info.
