Title: Uncanny Front Brake Noise
Post by: Airborne on June 02, 2008, 07:19:58 PM
Stupid question perhaps.

Whenever I get on my front brakes I hear this fast clicking noise. It sounds like a swarm of insects on a summer day in the woods. I'm assuming its coming from something rubbing my rotor in the wrong way but cannot pin point it. I checked out my rotors and have been keeping my eye on them very closely. Over the last few hundred miles of usage I've seen no unusual signs of wear on the rotors. I would post pictures but I can't see anything out of the ordinary anyway.

I havn't pulled the brake off the rotor yet because like I said nothing seems broken or worn. This has been going on for some time now and I can't stand not knowing what it is anymore. Any suggestions?

Bike is an s2r 800 if that makes a difference.

I'm assuming the brakes have never been serviced or the pads changed on this bike?  How many miles?  Are the pads still in good shape?  If I remember correctly, your bike has the Brembo pin-slide calipers with a spring clip on top of the pads.  Is the clip in place on each caliper?

It's just the sound of the drilled holes in the rotors going by the pads.  Normal.

I'd do a more in depth check to be sure, but my guess is this is all it is too.

My S2R800 has that same noise. Pads and rotors look almost new(4k miles). Stops fine. My guess is the pads might be slightly glazed, or maybe its the nature of the particular OEM pads to make that kind of noise. My advice would be to not worry about it. New pads of a different type might make the noise go away completely.

I just hopped on here to ask the same question. I will ask my dealer about it next time I am there, but it is good to know others have the same issue. I have noticed what smells like either brake or clutch the last two times I have finished a ride. Both were easy commute rides, so I am a little surprised either smell would be present.
