Title: Service Advice
Post by: DaFoose on May 07, 2010, 12:22:32 PM
I was just wondering what sorts of things I should do/get checked out. I haven't had any particular issues, but figured there are things I should do before summer comes along.

I am just over 13k miles on my 2001 Monster 900S. I bought it a few years ago with about 8k miles on it. I am not positive, but I want to say that the previous owner had the valves check (and possibly adjusted) at 6k miles. I haven't done much as far as maintanence since buying it, other than some oil changes, I've replaced both tires (at the shop).

I was reading about checking and replacing the belts from ducatisuite.com today. To me sounds simple enough to do. Assuming I take off the belt covers and don't notice anything being too worn, should I just check tension, or replace anyway?

Do you recommend have the valves checked and adjusted? This I don't feel too comfterble doing myself (although I attempted on my old FZ750 once). Or do I not really need this expense.

I am really cheap, and like the pride that comes with doing it myself, but I know my limits. Also what is generally the useful life of chain/sprockets. Everything in that department is stock AFAIK.

Thanks for the help!

I believe the typical 12k service involves....

New belts
Valve Adjust
Change Spark Plugs
Oil/Filter Change
Change Fuel Filter
Sync Carbs
Adjust Steering Head Bearing

If you're mechanically inclined you might be able to do all of it, especially with the help of some of the guys here. If you take the bike to the dealer or whatever mechanic you use I think it runs somewhere in the ballpark of $900, that's parts and labor.

Add to this renew brake and clutch fluid.  Maybe fork oil too if it looks/smells burnt.  IMO, if you are having a shop do the valves they may as well do the belts to since they will be taking them off to do the valve adjustment anyway.

i'm pretty comfortable with my mechanical abilities, but... with something like valves, in which doing myself i risk blowing the motor up... it is well worth the money to me for that responsibility to be on someone else's shoulders... at least for now. most shops seem to have a 6k or 12k service that is a flat rate package deal type thing... plus parts.

If you do nothing else, replace the belts. You are at or beyond the upper limit on them.  If one of them breaks it is likely catastrophic engine failure.

Sync Carbs

can cross that off the list. 900s went FI 2000

i think you are a due valve inspection, belt change, fuel filter, oil change/filter, chain&sprocket inspection, tire wear inspection, and all hydraulics flushed.

So lets say i have them do, valves, belts, and the inspections. What should I expect it to run me? I can (and have) do the rest myself.

Oh and I'll need a fork seal replaced. I don't have a Ducati dealer in the area, so I was hoping to get a cost from you guys, so I feel like I won't be getting screwed. (Although the shop i go to used to sell Ducatis some years ago, and so far have been kind to me).

I appreciate the hlp! [beer]
