Title: DC to AC
Post by: Dannyboy on May 10, 2010, 04:11:04 AM
I'm riding home to Atlantic City over Memorial Day weekend and I was hoping somebody could give me advice on a non-95 route.  I was thinking about 29 to 40 but 40 goes through Baltimore and I'm not sure I want to do that.  But 40 goes right into Jersey and AC.  I was also thinking about taking 50 to 404 through MD into DE and taking the ferry to Cape May.  I haven't done that in a long time but I don't know if I really want to spend $54.  Any other ideas?  Any help is appreciated.

that'd be the way I'd do it if I were in your shoes....

i would not cut over to 40 until you are north of the susquehana; you could go up rt 1 instead (this time catch it in Bel Air off of Rt 24); cross the river on the Conowingo Dam, continue up to Philly, go a bit north and hook over into NJ. Nice ride; scenic w/o to much traffic jam.

I like the 404 rout.

Thanks, guys.  Now my next question.  Is it easier to go through DC or around?  I haven't driven a car in the city, let alone ridden a bike.  I'm not worried so much about traffic because I'm leaving fairly early on Saturday morning.

zoom is right, it also depends on what time of day. You could go around, but it's longer, but if you're on the beltway at non rush hour times (and non lunch times) you can usually make it around faster than sitting at all the stoplights.

I'm in Bristow.  Just past Manassas.  I'll be leaving at roughly 5am on the 29th.

at 5am...with as much slab as you are going to be taking on...I'd beltway it around to get it all over with....sure you could find some interesting ways to, in through, and out of the city, but I don't think it'd really be all that much fun incomparo to other places en route to your final destination that you could use the time riding and exploring

I figured it out.  I'm taking the Beltway around to 50.  I really don't want to deal with the lights and whatever else in the city.  So, 50 to 301.  301 up to 40.  40 to home.  Fairly easy.  I just have to figure out the whole toll thing.  I think the Del. Mem. Br. should be the only toll and that wouldn't come until I leave.

Edit:  Thanks for the help.

Consider US50 to 301 North, but bail on Rt. 299 over to US 13, which then runs into Rt.1, then I-95 to US40, right after the bridge take Rt. 49 and follow that to Millville, once in Millville turn left onto Rt. 47 North go a short distance and look for sign to Mays Landing(beautiful BTW), turn right onto Mays Landing Rd, this will tak you to Rt. 40 and AC. It is a much more pleasant ride than Rt. 40, takes you through the Pinelands, was some great Enduro races there back in the day BTW. A couple of us explored the area last year while riding up to NJMP. Couple of other points, there is a nice rest area on US 301 North after 50, at the right turn onto Rt. 299 there is nice gas station/foodmart, go just past the intersection to enter.  - Gene

Yeah, I know that area all too well.  Between NJMP and the shooting club where I was a member, I've done that drive many times.  In fact, the shooting club is the only thing I really miss about Jersey.  That and the beach.  But the club has a 600 yd range and a few shorter ranges.  I REALLY miss it.
