Title: Clutch Replacement Options/Suggestions Post by: Grappa on June 02, 2008, 09:01:45 PM After reading factorPlayers post about the grinding noise during take-off, and reading subsequent replies, I thought I would take off my clutch cover and look around. I also hear a noise sometimes during take-off, but I would say it sounded more like a groaning of metal rubbing against metal. Only occasionally. Well, after looking around, and looking at my Haynes Manual, I would say I might need a full replacement. The tangs on the friction plates look like the letter T, and the inside ridges of the clutch basket look like a steak knife. I was hoping to hear any comments on after market clutch options available for a 2001 M900. I have 21K miles on my bike, I ride for pleasure only, no commuting, I like to ride aggressively but I don't ride crazy, no track around so I never get to ride like that. I don't have a maintenance history on the bike so it might be the original clutch. Curious about Nichols Aluminum products, Barnett, anything anybody would recommend.
Thanks! ;D Title: Re: Clutch Replacement Options/Suggestions Post by: knightrider on June 02, 2008, 09:36:14 PM from various sources, a nichols basket with barnett plates is awesome, i dont have the combo yet, but when my clutch needs replacing, thats what im getting.
Title: Re: Clutch Replacement Options/Suggestions Post by: davejenknz on June 02, 2008, 10:32:28 PM I've just replaced the OEM clutch on my 03 S4 with a Pro-Cutting / Barnett Combo from Desmotimes
It's a tad more expensive (+-$30) than a full Barnett unit as the plates are hand ground and fitted to the basket for a perfect fit. The basket is a harder ally than the Barnett and so should wear better. Plus you can get a hard anodised finish for extra durability. I've now put about 1000kms on the new unit and its just great. The reduction in noise alone was worth the extra $30. As a bonus, these units have seen 50,000 miles service. My OEM lasted 20,000 miles. |
