Title: Looking at a 2009 696. What do I pay??
Post by: simbany1 on May 10, 2010, 06:17:05 AM
So I'm in the shop for my first bike and I feel like the 696 is a perfect bike to start with. I'm 5'7" so the seat height is perfect and the weight of the bike is very manageable. So anyway, went to a dealer in Long Island and checked out what they had in stock. Looks like the new 2010 696 w/out ABS goes for around $9,500. They also had a 2009 696 with about 350 miles on it and asking $8,500 for it.

Since this is the first time I'm shopping for a bike, I have no idea how much I can negotiate down. I checked kbb, but their info on used bikes doesn't seem accurate bc I can't enter mileage. They just use an average mileage number. What's the best way to get an accurate value on a used bike. The '09 696 that they had with 350 miles was perfect but I don't know about $8,500 for it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!![center[/center]

dealer will always be higher for used bikes.

if you are looking for used, search the ads here or online. look around, you'll find a good price to compare.

Has the 696 with miles been titled, or was it a demo?

It makes a difference in dealer's pricing.

I know that the dealer pricing is going to be higher, but I'd like to put some money down and finance the rest. I know I can always get a bike loan from outside sourcing, but it's easier to do this all through the dealer.

Yes, it was titled and it's not a demo.

well, to be more accurate, where are you?
how many local dealers?
what kind of financing are they offering?

I'm in Queens, NY so I've been looking locally in Queens or Long Island. I went to Gold Coast in New Hyde Park, which is about 10 minutes from me. They have a nice staff and would be bringing my bike to them to get serviced since they are so close to me. There are a few other dealers, but not that close. The deal that they had for the 2009 696 was 4.9% for 48 months. Not great but doable.

I'd prefer to buy the bike locally, rather than shipping it to me. Being my first bike, I'd like to be able to see what I'm buying in person.

You can easily find one for $7500.

Easily? Can you show me where I could find a low mileage 696 for $7,500 "locally"??

But my question was how much I could negotiate down at the dealer. Depending on what the market is for a 2009 696 that has 350 miles...I don't know what it is. I know the dealer is going to be charging a little more, but I may be willing to a pay a little premium so that I can get their financing rates and maybe better service because I bought it from them. I sound like a real beginner don't I.... ;D

i see nothing wrong with doing it that way.  having a relationship with your dealer is valuable.

Sometimes when you are negotiating with a dealer, it is easier to negotiate for free future maintenance or free gear rather than lowering the price.

Makes sense. Now I have to figure out what to ask for to sweeten the deal.

Good advice.  Beyond the money of initial purchase, a good relationship with the dealer could mean cheaper service, faster service, and possibly a better deal on a future bike.  I spent a little extra on my bike through the shop, as opposed to an individual purchase, but the shop has more than made up for the difference in quality and speed of service.  My shop threw in a one time 30% off on any gear purchase and gave me a Scorpion Exo400 helmet.  The owner also delivered my bike to my house because I didn't have my endorsement at the time.  Not to mention the small problems that I have just gone up to the shop and the tech came out in the parking lot and fixed without any charges.  I feel like the extra money was well spent.  I guess it depends on the dealer.  I may have just been lucky.

Save even more money and try to chat this owner down on a 2006 Monster 620, I bought the identical bike with less than 600 miles for under $4500. Only mine did not come with a rear seat cowl. This is an excellent first bike...

I totally agree. Get the cheaper bike now, odds are your going to wreck it anyways.  Learn on the 620 and move up to a bigger bike later.  If you take care of the 620 you'll get a good bit of your money back later.  Lots more parts and acc. available used for an older bike too.

I bought my first ever bike from the dealer and was terrified of riding the 25 mostly-freeway miles to my house.  The salesman did me a huge favor and rode it to my house after the shop closed.  I just had to give him a ride back to the shop.  Priceless!

That's a great price for the 2010 and the other 2009's he's selling. If I were only closer. I'm in no rush right now. Just want to take my time and decide on how I want to buy my first bike.

Thanks for all the responses everyone!!

We've bought a used 2009 696 with 900 miles for $7,000 and one with 2,400 miles (but with carbon Termis and ECU, 14-t sprocket, ASV levers) for $6,800. Both were bought from private individuals in the summer of 2009, so were not very old at all.

We just bought a new 2009 696 from a dealer for $8,350 out the door with 14-t sprocket.

Yeah, that's why we quit looking for a used one. I think the dealer needed the space and wanted to clear out the 2009.

When I was looking for an M1100 back in Dec, I came across a new '08 696 Dark with Termi's installed for $8400 at a dealership in Maine.  I was tempted, but really wanted the SSSA  ;D

I almost bought the 2009 Dark 696 at Gold Coast, but I have a long time friend at New York Motorcyle (Jamaica) and he sent me to their sister store Formula One (Oakdale) where I got my 2010 696 Dark.  Joe Rossi at Formula One is very Ducati-wise and personable.

If you are financing anyway, try to include termi exhaust in the deal.  You WILL want them eventually and it is easier to add $1500 to the financed purchase price than it is to buy them out of pocket in six months! (I wish I did)

Other friends do business with Gold Coast and I have heard good things.  Gold coast had a few more 696's in the basement when I was looking at another bike so ask to see all their inventory.  However, Check Gold coasts website for the bike you were looking at.  I did have one friend buy a used bike there and renegotiated with them after finding it listed for $500 less on their webpage.

I am a new 696 owner on Long Island and this is what I learned so far.

Great to hear from someone from the area. I've heard about Formula 1, but I feel like it might be too far. Gold Coast is 10 minutes from me and it would be more convenient. I may wait on the purchase until the summer time or end of summer to check out what their selection looks like. I will probably be in a better position to buy at that time anyway. Unless a great deal comes up, I'm going to be patient. This is a big purchase for me. Approval from the wifey after almost 10 years of waiting. I'm going to make sure I take the time to think this one out and make a good decision. A 696 is most definitely the bike I want. Now it's just finding the right one for the right price.

not knocking the 696, but have you seen the 796?

Yeah I've seen the 796. Would be nice with the extra power too, but I'm trying to keep costs down being my first bike. I've been considering just picking up an older Monster too. Maybe like a 2005 dark. Been seeing them around in the 4k range, which would be a perfect price range for me right now.

^^^^^^ + 11ty billion.

I'm telling you man, this is really the best way to go.  You'll be devistated if you wreck a new bike.  Get an older 620 or 695 and learn on it.  It'll get you into just as much trouble as any other bike and is a very forgiving bike.  Plus, you can probably find one with a chop, exhaust and other mods that you will be doing to the 696.  Oh yeah, and they look much better  ;D

If this is your first bike, get the older one.

My 696 is a little more forgiving than my 620 was.

Using the common wisdom, it should be better to avoid getting a bike with an upgraded exhaust. In the case of a crash the cans are almost always going to take a hit, and a take-off stock muffler is usually going to be much less expensive than a used Termarrosil one.

I agree that it's pretty likely that a first bike will end up being crashed. I also think that it's generally a pretty bad idea to finance toys or to buy ones that stretch the budget. Overall, I don't think a new 696 is necessarily the best choice for a first bike. It's not a terrible one, though.

HAHAHA!

WRONG!  Most people crash, bang a stock muffler, only to find out its cheaper to get a set of aftermarket slipons to replace their mufflers than to replace a single OEM heavy, quiet pipe.

If you're talking new, yes.

I specified "take-off" replacements, as in a used one that someone took off when they installed aftermarket mufflers. I've seen like-new take-off's for a tiny fraction of what even a very cheap aftermarket exhaust would cost.

You seem to imply that quiet is somehow bad. My Termi's with the baffles in are slightly quieter than my wife's new stock mufflers. I like it that way because it keeps the peace with the neighbors.

I would rather not be loud and obnoxious. I also want to keep the peace with my neighbors and also not wake up the wife and kids if I'm coming home late at night after a night ride. Looking at a 2006 monster 620 dark right now in my area. Will keep you all posted.
