So after I took apart my tank, i replaced the filters and went to reassemble it. The problem i'm running into is that when I put the flange in the hole with the gasket it doesnt sit quite flush and when i go to screw in the grub screws to hold it into place, the grub screws dont set into the groove. Are there any special tips to get this thing sitting flush? I'm getting kinda frustrated.

I had this exact problem. The thing is a PAIN IN THE *** to get in correctly... [bang] After messing with it for hours what ended up solving it for me was smearing all of the edges with vaseline and then it finally glided in all the way. I'm sure someone will tell you that's not good for the gasket or something, but it was the only way I got it work.
good luck!
Getting the gasket on is the tricky part, but it *looks* like you've got it. To get it down that last little bit you really have to lean on it. Or tap it with a rubber mallet. The problem is that it is likely to dislodge the gasket. It takes a bit of work.
I end up slowly tapping it down with the back of a screwdriver. That allows me to seat it slowly and carefully, making sure the gasket doesn't fold or get pinched. I use a pick or very small screwdriver (like one for working on computers) to adjust the gasket. It's probably awful for the gasket, but I'm careful. Tape around the tank in case you slip. You don't want to leave a giant scratch across your paint.
i've been trying to be soft on it and only apply a little pressure because im told i dont know my own strength and end up breaking things. How much of a "tap" do you use with the mallet? is it possible to dent the tank by hitting the flange too hard with the mallet?
Any negative effects noticed with the vaseline?
thanks for the help ;D
Light tap. Don't wail away at it. You're not going to hurt the tank unless you start going nutty with it. The problem with the mallet is that it's a bit harder to control because the mallet head is so big. Besides, if it goes all the way in, you just have to pull the damn thing out again. Which hurt my fingers every time I do it. Ouch.
I hate trying to seat that gasket properly. >:(
that gasket is so annoying...
I only did it a couple months ago, but I haven't noticed anything yet. Only reason I could think it would be bad is if it deteriorates the rubber...
[thumbsup] on taping the tank regardless though
off to the living room to try said advice!
EDIT: Success! Thanks, i slowly tapped around the edge and as it seated i put one of the grub screws in! Thanks for the tips [thumbsup] now for a [drink]
Late to the party, but....
Grease on the O-ring and the tank opening.
Doesn't take a lot.
Even hand pressure on the flange, get it about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way in.
Then sneak the rubber trim gasket on, using a wooden tool to persuade it in.
Then push the flange all the way on.
Not sure at all if that's a better way than what's been described so far, but it works for me.
I've noticed that sometimes the O-rings swell up from the fuel, making it impossible to install.
So, I'll fit a new O-ring if the used one isn't cooperating.
Tangent....
On the fuel pump flange that goes into the bottom of an SBK tank.
Don't even bother trying to re-use the O-ring.
+1 on lubing the o-ring and rubber gasket.
I always used to use motor oil.
Doesn't take a ton of oil, just a light coat and I was always able to get it to slide all the way in with just pressure from my hand.
I know that you've got it on already, but here is the thread on how I did it.
