Title: Drunk driver wrecked my bike last night! What now...
Post by: zev on May 15, 2010, 04:35:50 AM
Hey All,

Listen to this crazy $hi*

I woke up yesterday morning to my neighbor knocking on my door...and when I answered it, he was like.. "um, I think your motorcycle is on my front lawn."

 :o :o :o

Yeah. Drunk driver relocated my beloved 06 S2R1K about 30 feet onto his doorstep. Good times.

So now I wanted to reach out and ask everyone here a question...

I'm sure this bike is totaled, which means I am in the market for a new (or new to me) Ducati. Looking for some advice on wether I should go with another S2R or upgrde to the S4Rs. I have been riding for 10+ years and found the the S2R was really the perfect bike for me. The power was smooth and predictable and it had no problem going 140 when I wanted it to. I live in the city, but I do get out on very long riding days frequently and found it a little uncomfortable after 8 hours or so... and I also myself looking for a little more grunt from time to time in the sweepers.

If money was no object, I would probably have a Multistrada 1200 sitting outside right now, but unfortunately I don't have an extra 20K sitting around...

So are there any other bikes I should consider? If I go with another Monster, do you think the S4Rs are there any drawbacks I should keep in mind (aside from higher service costs)? Would there be any difference in low speed riding or the action of the clutch? What else am I missing...?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about the bike. At least you weren't riding when the idiot hit the bike. It's hard to beat the S2R1000 as an all arounder for city and twisties. I personally like the simplicity of the air cooled monsters but wouldn't mind the extra power the S4R brings to the table.

Has anyone ridden both? Does the S4 deliver power just as smoothly as the 2R?

I LOVE my Monster ( so sorry to hear about your situation)... and I love my SBK...

If I had to do it over again, or consolidate, i'd for sure get an S4RS. Best of both worlds i think [thumbsup]

I must confess to not being familiar with S2R's but the S4Rs is GREAT!  Alot of umph whenever you need it and a top end rush that always makes me smile.  The ohlins is much better than any stock suspension I've ever ridden.  FWIW I've been riding for 19 years, I love this bike and hope to keep it for a very long time.

for a city bike with bumper to bumper traffic. id stay away from the S4Rs, if your commuting highway id go for it.

that motor gets make the beast with two backsing hot in traffic and those radiator fans will make commuting not so fun.

i have an 06 S2R1k. I dont particularly like the mosnter all that much....after riding the GT1000.... lol

but the 1k motor is really nice. If only it came stock at 100RWHP i think thats the magic number.

Unless everything on the bike has turned to junk, buy it back from the insurance co. You will be able to sell the parts on this board and make a good profit. And make others happy in the process.

I had a 2006 s2r and made the mistake of taking a demo s4rs for a ride. Hands down, I would go 4 valve!  I actually found it easier to handle in slow going with much better fuel delivery. If I had bought the S4RS, I would still own it. As it is, I sold the S2R and only rarely miss it.

I rode an S4Rs for 2 &1/2 years and even with a 1098-R it still felt like it had a mean streak.

The S4Rs handles great and w, a full Termi exhaust it sounds bad and has all the power you will probably want.

It is fairly light and I happen to believe it is a beautiful looking bike.

You won't be disappointed.

There should be some good deals on leftovers if your Dealer is in any kind of shape like mine.

Other than your current bike getting wrecked, what's changed since yesterday?  Were you considering seeling the S2 for the S4?  I think your quote above says it all.

I'm in the minority here, but I vote for the 2-valve.

Then again, my monster is not my only motorcycle.  I'm not having to make one bike do it all.

Good luck (and sorry about your loss).

my vote would be to stay 2 valve also, but I'd consider getting a used Multistrada as they are coming up dead cheap because people want to get the new Multi....it has everything your old S2R1K has and the ability to be comfortable for those 8+ hour rides as well as commuter/city agility.

If your bike paid off?  If so do the math and see if it is feasible to buy bike and fix up on the cheap.  If you can make out well then i say do that ride the bike while putting some money away.  Then next year or the year after when the multi has been out for a bit sell your S2R and buy a used multi on the cheap!  Your dreams will come true  [thumbsup]

I like the smaller duc's They seem to be a bit more fun on the streets. Get another S2R.

I owned an S2R 800 for about a year and rode several 1000's.  I moved to an S4R and regret NOTHING.  I like the exposed plumbing but it's a personal taste thing.  The air cooled Monsters feel lighter in the turns but once you get used to the exta weight of the S4R they are buttery smooth.  Go ride one and see for yourself.

I'll likley have a '03 MS1000 for sale that'll be at the sub $7K mark. 8)
