Title: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: sugarcrook on May 17, 2010, 09:17:27 AM The startup I work for is expanding and I'm looking for a couple really good software engineers to join the team. Here's the write-up I'm posting up on CL later this week, but I figured I'd post here first if anybody's looking.
A profitable start-up in the cable advertising space is looking to expand its development team to include another well-rounded developer. I've detailed some of what we're looking for below and if you think you're a good fit, you're welcome to send over your resume. Personal Requirements: * Must be a US citizen. No exceptions. * Reside in the Bay Area and able to commute to the office at least 3 days a week. * Accustomed to working with a small, distributed team and collaborating over email, Skype and IM. Obviously, you need to be able to produce with little supervision. * Innovative thinker and a fast coder. We're constantly working to set the tempo in our product space. You'll need to help develop solutions to problems and implement them quickly. * Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written. Experience and Technical Requirements: * Ideally you've worked on several different types of products with varying teams. Our product space is highly dynamic and a diverse experience base will help you succeed. * Must be a Java expert with at least 5 years of experience. Experience with Hibernate, Spring, web frameworks (GWT, Wicket), and XML technologies (SOAP, SOA, XSD, WSDL, etc) is required. * Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL and a firm grasp of SQL. * Additionally, you must be familiar with development tools such as Maven, IDEA/Eclipse, unit testing, Subversion, among others. * Experience with non-relational data stores, caching and producing highly available applications is also desirable. Bad news: I'm a Director of Engineering, not an engineer. :'( Let me know if you ever need a CTO who can still write code :-\ Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: rgramjet on May 17, 2010, 11:26:09 AM Are they open to using a recruiting firm?

No really. I'd rather find somebody through word of mouth. You tend to get a lot of crap candidates from firms. Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: rgramjet on May 17, 2010, 12:12:17 PM I hear ya. Keep in mind, crap can come from anywhere.
A good recruiting firm will take the time to make sure the fit is a good one........can ya tell my wife is a recruiter and going out on her own?? Good luck Mang! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: Spidey on May 17, 2010, 12:18:12 PM Why do I hear Ogre chanting "Nerds! Nerds! Nerds!" in the background? [laugh]
Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: rgramjet on May 17, 2010, 12:21:18 PM BTW What salary are they looking to pay?
Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: sugarcrook on May 17, 2010, 12:49:14 PM The salary is pretty good for the right person. Good enough that I'll expect anybody I hire to work until they drop and be fully rested by the time he/she hits the floor.
Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: enzo on May 17, 2010, 12:59:06 PM Bad news: I don't really like computers.
Good news: I'm really good at "working from home." give me a call. Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: Drunken Monkey on May 17, 2010, 02:06:58 PM Yeah, but I already have that job. :) So, you're saying that if something were to happen to you there'd be an opening? [evil] Seriously, I'll keep my eyes open. A lot of guys in this group (or who used to work in this group) also fit this description. Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: sugarcrook on June 30, 2010, 04:47:22 PM Where have you found your candidates? Craigslist? Monster? From the resumes and phone interviews, I think they all came from methadone clinics. Instead of looking for senior devs, I'm going to look for 2 junior devs. Not sure my luck will be any better. No good stories, but one guy did try to convince me that his raging anti-social behavior would be a benefit. He didn't get a call back. Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: rgramjet on June 30, 2010, 04:50:16 PM I thought that was a prerequisite!
Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: ride_sf on July 01, 2010, 07:46:44 AM From the resumes and phone interviews, I think they all came from methadone clinics. Hahaha... I've had the same experience interviewing "engineers" we've found through craigslist ads. I'm a mid level software engineer at the company I work for. Actually, we did find a couple good ones, but it didn't work out because they wanted like 200k per year.... They get paid only if there is a placement....with a 90 day quarantee. They weed out the $200k Crack smoking, anti-social, methadone junkies that wont look past the tips of their shoes when talking to you. How valuable is all the time you wasted weeding through these people compared to paying a fee to have someone present you with 2-5 qualified applicants. Most recruiters charge 25-30% of the first years salary. My wife charges 15%. The DMF Special! [Exit Shameless Plug] Title: Re: Wanted: Software Engineers Post by: ride_sf on July 01, 2010, 10:46:34 AM Very true rgramjet, we used a technical recruiter to hire a few QA engineers and got very good results... Ended up hiring one of the best QA engineers we've ever had.

They get paid only if there is a placement....with a 90 day quarantee. Oh I get it. But we're not looking for employees because we'd have to offer benefits like health care. I'm basically the CTO/Director of Engineering and I'm not even an employee. I've talked to my boss about using your spousal unit, but I'm not sure how it breaks down with the commission. Have her send me a PM if she's interested in talking with me about it. |
