I took a friends 2001 600 Dark for a spin the other day and felt very cramped on it...
Is there a noticable difference in size and seating if you moved to a S2R or something along those lines?
the seat and pegs (rear sets) make a huge difference. I have a Corbin seat which is slightly higher than the stock seat. My S2R and S4R sit completely different due to the seat. I'm 5'10 with 32 inseam by the way.

My m800 feels way smaller to me than my s2r1000 but on paper they are about the same. I like the feel of the m800 waaaay more!
The '01 600 (which you rode), the S2r (which you asked about) and the 696 (in your title) are all different models. But yes, the s2r and the 696 are roomier than an '01 600, which is the redheaded stepchild of all of the monsters ('cept for the Japanese Monster 400).
i have a 2002 m750, im 6'2 -6'3 and i love my monster classic to death.
I have clipons which extend my arms and helps to stretch me out. My friends have the handlebars
and i feel a lot more cramped just from the bars *(although the position lends to longer rides without
killing my wrists)
rearsets are to be installed soon

S2R will have handlebars a little lower and maybe a little further away, the seat is 20mm higher - otherwise same same, but different ;) My impression of the 696 is that it feels better/roomier to sit on, but the handlebars are too close for me at 6' 4". YMMV.
the time I've spent on both the 696 and 1100 only crushed my nuts. I wasn't comfortable at all but maybe I'm partial to the older Monsters, alright I am.
the best 696/1100 riding style is more butt back instead of humping the tank. much more comfortable that way
I still slid forward too much
more knee squeezing :D and yes take that how you like :D
I had a 696+, got the same problem with the sliding towards the tank and getting my balls crushed a bit :). I have now a Monster 796. Seating is much better and steering is also raised, around 20mm higher. I don't slide anymore towards the tank.
The riding position of a 796 is much better then a 696.
