Hi guys, I just got my S4RS, and it's my first bike with a dry clutch (HOORAY! ;D). I've noticed that during clutch slip when moving off, the bike "shudders" or "chatters" at the biting point, as the bike starts to accelerate. I'm not sure if I'm using the right words, but feels like the bike's vibrating a little. When the clutch is fully engaged the feeling disappears. Is this normal for dry clutches?
What are your engine RPMs?
Sounds like you just might no be giving it enough gas
+1
Probably need to give it some more gas.
Also, is the bike new or used?
My clutch was feeling weird on the S4r and we swapped out the clutch fluid/bled and it was a completely different bike afterward.
Thanks guys, new to the bike so been really careful on the gas. I haven't noticed what rpm, but the next time I ride it I'll take note. Got the bike used. Thing is I never felt this "chatter" on a wet clutch, not sure if that's a problem on this one.
The stock clutch on my S4Rs was nice and smooth, just like a wet clutch. Now I've got an aftermarket clutch and it is not quite as smooth.
If the clutch basket is beat the plates will not engage smoothly as well.
If you end up ruling out riding technique you should check that out.
I thought my dry clutch was make the beast with two backsed up too and was discouraged. My shifting was rough as make the beast with two backs.
After we bled out all the old fluid, it was a completely different clutch.
i think I'd bleed it and then see what you think.
I wouldn't pay attention so much to the RPM's, the bike will tell you what it wants.
I had a hard time going from a wet clutch to a dry clutch.
The first dry clutch I rode was a demo at the dealer. I stalled it twice in the parking lot. It was a bit embarassing and I am sure the sales guy laughed at me.
Over the course of the weekend I got pair of new rubbers, so took the chance to ask the head tech at the local dealership. Turns out that it's the way I slip the clutch like a wet clutch. The "chatter" or even slight "grinding" sensation I felt is a combination of letting out the clutch too slowly, and not revving the engine enough. Seems to go away at high enough rpms (3k or so). But just for good measure the clutch is about 19k and running, I should factor in new plates soon (and new pressure plate, SS springs and other goodies)!
Still trying to get used to the monstrous torque. It's actually pretty hard to ride at low speed.
Yeah Ducs don't really like it below 3k. As you experienced you'll get a juddering jerking feel. Slipping the clutch as needed should keep the power under control at low speed, just keep enough RPMs on. And a liitle dab of rear brake can help tame things too
Right! Thanks for all the advice and feedback!
I like to let go of the clutch real fast, give it lots of throttle and hang on for dear life! Makes kind of a groaning noise as it launches. I love the rush! will never go back to a wet clutch

That groaning can be eliminated.
How?

ducpainter,
Can you elaborate when you say "spare beveled steel disc"? Is this a clutch disc? Do you have a part number?
Thanks in advance!
please elaborate

The package says disco bombato driven disc. p/n 067516530.
This fixed my grabby ?slipper? (the words just don't sound right together) clutch - all smooth now.
edit: I was wondering if over time, the frictions wear to the beveled disc and you lose the spring action. If that were the case, would flipping the beveled disc over restore the spring action?

I had a similar chattering or groaning sound on an 07 S2R 1K on 1st gear takeoffs only. When I replaced the stock springs with Speedy Moto springs, the sound disappeared.
However, last night (1000 mi. after the new springs were installed) I noticed a completely different, new sound. It's a chirping sound that only occurs when the motor is warmed up
My thoughts were to take the clutch apart, clean it, and replace the bearing. The bike only has 5,500 miles on it and hasn't been ridden hard.
Any suggestions?

My s2r1k chirps sometimes too. Not bad but its there. Im gonna clean it soon and see if that does anything. It started groaning and chirping a bit, and then i had the 6k service done. After my 6k service, it was completely gone until recently. Im at 8k now. A fluid thing maybe? Im not hard on the clutch at all. Am i letting the clutch out to slowly?
I have put about 2k on it since i last cleaned the clutch. when i cleaned it the first time, just before my service, it was NASTY!!!! Before i put my shiny new speedymoto pressure plate on, I blew the clutch out with an air compressor and my buddy was like, "Hold your breath dude, that shit is soooo bad to inhale."
I briefly browsed some other threads and it looks like there are some possible solutions.
Im gonna put up a tiny little sign on the cover that says, "No Birds Allowed!" Ill see if this works and report back. [thumbsup]
