Title: New toy.. 78 900SS
Post by: monsta on May 20, 2010, 12:01:45 PM
I've wanted one of these since I was a pup. When I bought the monsta 15 yrs ago I was actually looking for an older SS, but couldn't find anything suitable at the time. The desire for an old SS never died!

This one is freshly rebuilt with less than 1 hr of riding time on it, probably half of that by me!  :)

Awesome. Would you mind giving us poor unfortunates a bit of a ride report?

I have always seen a lot of Monster in these bikes (OK I admit that should be the other way around) and would appreciate a comparison in the ride experience from someone that knows.

Thanks.

I think the title kinda gives it away ;)

Beautiful bike.

I don't know if you have seen "The Italian Machine" before but it's a funny and entertaining short movie featuring the 900SS. They have it in full below.

beautiful bike, but why do the front forks look like they are on the wrong side??? thought the brake calipers should be behind the forks? maybe it was just the race bikes or there were different forks available?

If for some reason a bevel ever ended up in my garage, I'd have to get this:

That one would sit in my living room, not the garage. What's the story?

well, I havn't ridden it that much yet.  I find the riding position ok, I'm about 5'7", its kinda stretched out at the front but my legs are tucked in reasonably tight. Not too much different from my monster because I have clip ons and rearsets.
As you'd expect, everthing is more primitive, switches are 'clunky', throttle is stiff, I'll have popeye's forarm from the clutch! Ride is hard, its down on power and the brakes are absolute crap!...   BUT, it does seem to handle quit nice, tho maybe a bit wollowy. I'll have a play with the suspension at some stage.
All in all, nothing like like anything modern, tho still fun to ride. Draws plenty of attention and the pipes are LOUD! :)
article by Boris in this fortnights 'Australian motorcycle news' magazine decribes it like riding in a shopping trolley and getting pushed of a roof...  I  ;D   I already have a bruise on my calf from the kickstart!  :)

thanks, I hadn't seen it!  classic! haha   [thumbsup]

Bought it local from VeeTwo
I'd be up for that Dave. What bevel do you have? Do you ever go out on a DOCWA bevel ride?

good idea!  :)
that looks like the VeeTwo gear gazer.. just might look and see if any still available on monday.  :)

That one would sit in my living room, not the garage. What's the story?
Yeah, it pretty much will be.
Its a bitsa. Came into VeeTwo as a frame with wheels, engine full of wasp's nests because it came from Darwin, and a box full of bits. Engine and frame dont match, so its not original.
It was never ment to be concourse level it was just going to showcase and test VeeTwo parts, so its far from perfect.
Anyhow, I got to do a lot of the work on it, if not most. (I work there as a machinist) so its kinda my baby! :)
Since then, that part of VeeTwo has folded and they wanted to get rid of the bike, I came up with the fun tickets, and we're all happy!   8)

Hey monsta, you gotta love the old bruise on the back of the calf trick  ;D.
Have an 81 mhr, she only goes out on a sunny sunday now days .
Havn't been on any Docwa rides , think they had one to Toodyay a month or so ago for the bevels? Have to try to get to one in the future.

Oh man, that's an awesome bike!  I'd make room in the garage for one of those!
