Title: tank protection Post by: uglyducky on May 21, 2010, 07:32:40 PM just getting my bike painted and speeddog is doin about 500 things to it as well. wondering if some of you have some pics of various tank pads/protectors you've used so i can peruse and see what some different stuff looks like. also wondering if those clear pads yellow over time, etc.
Title: Re: tank protection Post by: msh441 on May 21, 2010, 07:50:21 PM Very interested in other options as well.
I have an adhesive clear square protector on my tank. It's actually worked fine for 8 years. Though it has not yellowed, it is a bit scuffed/dull in one spot where my jacket or somthing rubs. I have a really nice formed carbon fiber tank protector on my Triumph. I'd love to find somthing similar for the monster. I'll be watching this thread for sure to see what options are out there. Title: Re: tank protection Post by: Ducatl on May 21, 2010, 08:59:47 PM I've got a clear 3m tank shield that's also lasted years and has yet to yellow, it does have a few dull areas from contact with my jacket.
I really want one of the older real carbon pads that adhered with like double sided tape, none of the decent carbon manufacturers seem to make them anymore though. Shiftech does, very very very nice stuff!!!I really want one of the older real carbon pads that adhered with like double sided tape, none of the decent carbon manufacturers seem to make them anymore though. Title: Re: tank protection Post by: Ducatl on May 22, 2010, 08:38:25 AM I have a '99 and they only list for 00+ and I'm not sure if there was some slight variation in tank shape across those years (possibly with the efi tanks being different), I've also yet to call and just ask them. ;)

Thanks. It's a Carbon Fiber piece I got from motostrano years ago. Sorry, I don't recall who makes it. It's not on their web site anymore, but I think I saw 1 or some in the store the last time I was there. Title: Re: tank protection Post by: scduc on May 22, 2010, 02:40:32 PM I am using the clear one that is "designed" for the 696/1100. 3 piece. but I think it looks great on my S2R. It's nice because it's fairly big and covers a larger area then the skinny other ones. I have not noticed any yellowing, I had one on my old tank for more then 2 years and I would occasionally hit it with a little Honda Brite and it looked as good as new.

Title: Re: tank protection Post by: uglyducky on May 22, 2010, 05:57:56 PM What color(s) are you getting? paint? if so, pearl black (looks lite anthracite or charcoal) with a candy black stripe. Title: Re: tank protection Post by: b. on May 24, 2010, 07:07:00 AM I have a CF tank pad from Shift-Tech. +4 yrs and it hasn't faded.

I've used the "Tank Slapper" product (the removable static film, not the 3m adhesive) on 2 bikes and been pretty happy with the results. It holds up really well, and is nearly invisible. No yellowing on either after several years of use, but I also park indoors most of the time. Title: Re: tank protection Post by: NoisyDante on May 28, 2010, 10:39:53 AM I just got this in today. Finally found it at Advanced Motorsports Ducati in Dallas, it's really for a Sport Classic but it's been discontinued. My current protector has a corse logo on it, doesn't fit with the rest of the bike.
It's surprisingly malleable, so I don't think there will be any adhesion problems due to the differently shaped tank.
