Title: Is anyone going to the Indianapolis 500 this weekend?
Post by: cyrus buelton on May 26, 2010, 05:14:55 AM
thought maybe we could do a little meet up, shotgun some beers, and be general whiskey tango's for the day.

Not sure on my ticket/pass situation yet, but looking like I am a general admission ticket holder this year unless I can convince my buddy who drives to borrow his hard card  ;D

Post up and we can figure plans out.

I used to live in Indy so I know the city pretty well if we want to grab some lunch/dinner/beers/crack.

I would but my friend with all the Indy connections isn't coming through for me this year.

;)  ;D

I lost my connection. not the friendship or anything, just the ability for the connection.

However, I was told to wait to purchase a ticket as I am sure they will find me something.

I am serious.

2 blocks south of Butler University (46th St, West of Meridian/US-31) is the make the beast with two backsing hood and I lived there.

we'd find needles and shit on the street, it was nasty.

Anyway, my neighbor next door was a crack dealer until the Sheriff's Department served a warrant on his wife for violating parole.

A friend of mine 2 blocks further south from where I lived had some crack head try to rip out their window AC unit to steal/sell as well as rob their house.

His wife ended up shooting the guy a few times with a BB gun; they bought a shotgun the next day.

Spent 6 weeks there back in 04 while I was testing 911 for a living. Not south side of Chicago bad but definitely some neighborhoods I wouldn't have gone to had it not been for the police escort hehe.

Damn shame, too... Butler-Tarkington is one of the most beautiful parts of the city.

As for going to the track.... emphatic "no."  IRL racing holds no appeal for me, and I can get drunk and sunburned in my yard for next to nothing.  Funds are going to allow for one track trip this year, and that will be MotoGP if its anything.

You must live in Indy or have lived in Indy if you called it the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood..............

I used to live on Berkley.....728 West and I think 622 E.

Right on the grassy knoll.............which I am sure you are familiar with if you know that area.

For those that aren't..........

Basically there was a road they ripped up, planted grass and let it go.

It's pretty cool. There are still sidewalks, street lights, curbs, and benches........but no road.

The front of your house faces out on a grass street.

Great for house parties.

Formerly Broadripple and Speedway, now Brownsburg.

Worked in Broadripple for ten years, had a couple co-workers that stayed/partied/crashed in that area.

Was the Melody Inn funtional when you were here?

Holy shit, can I tell you a story about that make the beast with two backsing place.

First of all, for people that don't know Indianapolis, 38th St is not a very nice area. It is dangerous. The zip code that Butler is in had the highest syphillis rate in the US back in 2000 or around there.

The melody inn is a "bar" at 38th and Illinois (or capital, I can't remember).

Let's just say white people aren't exactly welcome at this bar.

So this place tried to run some college specials for Butler students on wednesday nights. You'd show your ID and get like 50 cent beers or something.

Well, the locals didn't take kindly to this during week 2 of the promotion.

A huge brawl broke out and next thing I know there is a local with a Tek-9 firing rounds off in the parking lot.

A few guns were pulled in the bar, but I never pulled mine (yes, I had a CCW and at the time, and I think it still is, legal to carry in a bar in Indiana).

we got the hell out and never went back.

I think that may be the event that led to the place changing hands.

It's Indy's new punk rock mecca (well, neck-and-neck with The Vollrath, which is another great story).  The crowd at The Mel is now equal parts indie, hipster, punker, and gearhead.  Hoodie types and thugs are no longer welcome. It's actually a great place to catch a show.

CCW is still legal w/ permit.

edited to remove gun law. You know better juDD

no shit about the Melody Inn. That is crazy. It still sits in a shit ass area of town.

Right across from Community Spirits........and yes.......I have stories from there too.

Let's just say two 19yr olds shouldn't ride their mountain bikes there to get beer.

I miss Indianapolis. Can't wait to be there tomorrow

and

I got hospitality and a suite ticket, so no joe blow fan even though I was kind of looking forward to it.

Well, yeah... one punker bar ain't quite full-scale gentrification.  But there is this very small, very defined bubble of DMZ that includes the bar, sidewalk, and parking lot across the street.  I've riden there, but I always park within view of the front door.

The weekend door guy is a friend of mine, and he was explaining the finer points of clearing the parking lot with nothing but a MagLight and collapsable baton. Balsy, or really stupid, but either way I was impressed.
