Title: IRON BUTT
Post by: trpletme on May 28, 2010, 02:55:13 AM
Anyone done one on their Monster? I'm planning on doing the New England one this summer. See if I feel like Dolph after how many miles?

It can be done (but not by me for several reasons), good luck!!

I've done the two entry-level Iron Butt rides, but on my Bandit.  The range on my Monster (~100 miles) would mean stopping too often to make 1000 miles in a reasonable amount of time.  Even on my Bandit with a range of 180-200 miles, I make a lot of stops compared to a "real" touring bike with a range of >250 miles.

Now, if you're talking about the Iron Butt rally, that would be difficult.

All this said, check out Rachel from Oregon (tigerracing.net).  She put some miles on her Monster, and perhaps approached or even equaled an IBA rally pace.

Here she is: http://tigerracing888.tripod.com/ (http://tigerracing888.tripod.com/)

I've wanted to propose to her, but I think she has a boyfriend.   :-\       ;D

wrong bike lol

no it just depends on how you have it set up. If, like me, you have below-tripple clip ons and raised pegs NO.

but if you shop here, yes.

The key with any of the Iron Butt Association rides is pace.  Figure out how many miles you need to cover every hour, including fuel/food/bio stops, and you should be fine.  I did the SS1000 and BB1500 last year on my K bike and the keys were a Camelback and an iPod.

If you check the list of certified finishers (http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/ssbbfin1.cfm?CFID=656559&CFTOKEN=82834186 (http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/ssbbfin1.cfm?CFID=656559&CFTOKEN=82834186)), you'll see quite a few Monsters in there.

I did it on a Roadstar.  Is that cheating?  8)

I was hurting for weeks so I can only imagine what kind of hurt it must be on the Monster.

I did 1700 miles on my 1098S during a trip from San Diego to Dallas in 24 hours a couple years ago...
I should have done the Iron Butt.  I still have the gas receipts (business trip so I saved them)

That's amazing...how did you feel afterwards?

Also, does that say max speed 174.99 mph?

Planning on doing an Iron butt on my S4Rs sometime this summer.  I have done a 600 mile day so far, and I was sore (back, butt and legs) that night but fine the next day.
 You can do it  [moto]

I was planning a trip from San Francisco to Canada (replicating my fathers trip he did on a harley)

I rode for 9 hours, from Hayward, to pt reyes (Through tam-ish), down CA-1 all the way to Santa cruz (my buddy who was riding with me had never been down CA1 so i was accompanying him)

Below the triple clip ons were not meant to be ridden that far, lol. I was trying everything, at one point we were going 80 and I was up on my gas tank letting my legs flap behind me.

My damn friend is like 5' tall so he just laid on his 929's tank.  I wish I weren't 6'3"

Try a 1098 R at 6'5" with a 35" inseam and soon to be 61 years old w, two Knees that should have been replaced according to the Ortho Doc back in '01 due to Osteoarthritis. :( :(

My disabled wife (paralyzed left leg and total hip replacement) did a SaddleSore 1000 on a stock ergo 2000 Yamaha R1 a couple of years ago. She figures a Monster probably wouldn't be an issue at all other than maybe some additional wind resistance if you don't have any type of fairing. The trick there would be to make sure you are relaxed and if you ever catch yourself getting tense....stop doing it.

I did a 900 mile day once on a stock s2r1000... I could have done the extra 100 miles to hit a saddle sore mark.. but it was going through the high desert.

Yes, it can be done... no, it's not comfortable.

I  used to sit through 8 hour meetings quarterly at work reviewing all the past projects and strategizing new projects for the new quarter.

My butt hurt from those meetings and I was sitting in a rather comfortable chair.

Nothing like a 1098 R seat which let's face it is meant for racing.

My jewels still go numb after 40 miles.

I don't know of a stock seat that doesn't suck.  The stock seat on the K1200GT is a nightmare.  Things are much better with a Corbin and sheepskin.
