Title: Good places to eat around the world
Post by: badgalbetty on May 29, 2010, 05:10:52 AM
Lots of you travel to different cities and towns either for work or holidays and sometimes you must wonder where is a good place to eat in a town you dont know.
I'll start........
Delta Cafe, Portland Oregon USA
Good food, lots of it,good drinks, tattooed fun servers and always more food than you can possibly consume. This is a CASH ONLY place, no plastic and no checks. They do have an ATM.

Good post, bgb.

Anywhere around Birmingham, AL you need to stop in and eat at Hamburger Heaven. Especially the original one in Irondale... Bobby Bowden eats there nd takes whoever he is with when he is in town. Freaking good food right there.

Asheville NC

Nine Mile Jamaican Restaurant on Montford incredibly creative fusions that actually work

Mela Indian Restaurant on N. Lexington/Broadway best Indian ever

Twelve Bones Smokehouse on Riverside (down in the River District)  BBQ like it is supposed to be...really done proper, not par-boiled & baked slop

get the BBQ take-out and go across the tracks behind the building across the lot to the Wedge Brewery

Around the world:

No order:

1. Hillbillies Fried Chicken - Cork, Ireland (my god their friend chicken breast sandwich at 2am kicks ass)
2. Five-Star Pizza - Cork, Ireland (best garlic cheese bread I have ever had)
3. Candy Store in Amsterdam, Netherlands (no idea where this place is or the name, but I did eat a kilo of coke bottles one night in 2002. I might have been high)
4. Gyro Shoppe in Montpellier, France. (I can't give you directions, but I remember where it is. make the beast with two backsing awesome)
5. Bad Boys Burritos - Key West, Florida (hippy place, all workers are stoned, kobe beef burritto, and all veggies are cut up fresh for each burrito)
6. King Gyros Fast Food - South Bend, Indiana (might be a national chain, no idea)
7. Brueggers Bagels - Damn those softwhiches with jalopeno cream cheese is awesome

That's it for now

Galveston, TX: el Nopalito (the original one on 42nd Street between Church and Winnie back behind the cotton warehouses). Amazing Tex-Mex / Norteño food. It's always surrounded by police cars because one of the owners was a county sheriff Mental Health Deputy. You can't get in on Sunday morning unless you beat the church crowds. It's a really seedy place that you'd never enter if you were in your right mind unless you've already been. My kid consists mostly of food from el Nop, since that's mostly what my wife ate for 3/4 of a year. My daughter would only eat the sauce from their chicken mole when she was in the hospital.

Cozumel, Mexico: la Candela. This is one of many superb family-style restaurants on the island but by a tiny margin our favorite. They have a great snapper in achiote steamed in a banana leaf, daily cochina familiar specials, and tasty micheladas.

I've got many "favorite" restaurants all over the world, but these are the ones I'd order my last meal from.

+1

Hodads in Ocean Beach/San Diego

Joan's on Third Street in Hollywood (best sandwiches I've ever had)

There's a little place in downtown Fort Worth has the best brisket tacos known to mankind. Mi Cocina is the name I think.

1. Dirty Martin's Kum Bak - UT Campus in Austin TX
       - Remodeled about 5 years ago when taken over by new ownership, but still has the baddest ass burgers in Austin.
2. Maui Mike's Fire Roasted Chicken in Wahiawa, HI (island of Oahu)
       - Simple recipies, all natural ingredients, homemade sauces, just delicious. If you're ever in Honolulu, make the drive up here.
3. Jamesons - North Shore Oahu, Hawaii
       - Bar/Restaurant with fresh fish caught daily. Clam chowder here is out of this world (sorry East Coasters) Blows the chowder that I had in coastal Maine out of the water. Calamari steaks lightly breaded and pan fried just melt in your mouth.
4. That place down the road- Shamal Khowst Province, Afghanistan
       - We didn't actually know the name of the place, but there was a "hotel" down the road from the outpost I lived in while serving in Afghanistan. Our interpreter would go down and order for us, then about 20 minutes later 3 children would show up with platters piled high with rice, sheep, and beef. And their flatbread was amazing. It was almost like a taco bar. You take the bread, fill it with the appropriate items, and eat. SOOOOOO GOOOOOD. Hope it's still in business.

Pizza - Verona's in Southington CT.  Not fancy, kind of a dive, no exotic toppings, just the best most addictive wood fired pizzas I have ever found.  A large pizza cooks in about 3 minutes because the oven as at 800-900 degrees!  If it is good enough for Bill Clinton (President heart attack), it is good enough for me.

BBQ - Smoky's in Singapore.  Just the fact that you can find real American style BBQ in Singapore puts this one on the list.  Also has Archipelago beer on tap.  Good stuff.

Pizzeria Mozza - Los Angeles, CA - best pizza in LA, IMO.

Villa D'Este - Cernobbio, Italy - on Lake Como, beautiful surroundings.

Millennium - San Francisco, CA - vegetarian joint, had a great potato wellington there.

Kathmandu Guest House - Nepal - actually the chicken soup is awesome.

Moonshadows - Malibu, CA - really good seafood, had the black cod and tuna tartar.

OMG!  I used to go here all the time with the rest of the ER folks in the morning after work when I was at UTMB.  The breakfast burritos are as big as your plate, and delicious.

Wow - when were you in the ER there? I ran the "crisis clinic" in the (then-) new ER for 3 years from 1992 to 1995.

There was always Sonny's for long nights of, er, studying. I think they had food, but all I remember (and hazily, at that) was beer.

Three UTMB refugees at one fairly niche board?! I never knew! I was at UTMB as an autopsy assistant during college at TAMU, then for medical school from 1984-1988, residency from 1988-1992, and a fellowship 1992-1993, then facultized for 2 years before realizing I'd never really intended to stay there long at all. My wife worked in the Pathology department that whole 11 years.

I wonder if any of us ever met, or know some of the same people?

I was there in 2000 as a respiratory therapist (I had just finished up nursing school at that point but hadn't taken the boards yet).  I always worked ER.  Awesome crew there.   I still keep in touch with some of those folks, but unfortunately a couple of my favorite docs from there have died.   :'(

I'll name a few places I have been to and stuck with me.
Ristorante Ponte Rosso, Via Garibaldi 179, Voghera, (PV) Italy. My uncle owns it, made the Michelin guide and the Gambero Rosso guide several times also won several awards during the years. Uncle Mimmo is a Sommelier, he'll guide you to some good drinking as well.
http://www.ristoranteponterosso.it/menu.htm (http://www.ristoranteponterosso.it/menu.htm)

White House. V. Galileo galilei 29 89048 Siderno (RC). Italy  Awesome pizza and pasta.

The Blue Dahlia Via XX Settembre 33/35, Marina di Gioiosa Jonica, (RC) Italy
located right in front of the beach. I grew up on this place spent many nights there listening to live music and enjoying the ocean breeze.
Pizza, pasta, fish, panini, crepes and anything else the staff from around the world would come up with.
http://www.bluedahlia.splinder.com/ (http://www.bluedahlia.splinder.com/)

Golosia: Piazza Zaleuco Marina di Gioiosa Ionica (RC) Italy best gelato ever can't wait to sit on the square at 4 am stuffing my face listening to live music just down the street from the beach.

Pizzeria Bianco Phoenix AZ  almost as good as the real deal.

G-spot
Gelato Spot Phoenix AZ another almost as good as the real deal.

La Enoteca, Lucca (LU)  fresh pasta everyday with a large selection of local Tuscan wines
Title: Re: Good places to eat around the world

There was a trattoria in Varzi (PV) Italy where I used to go on monday nights to eat their tagliata di manzo, cooked on hot clay shingles covered with fresh arugola and cherry tomatos  [wine]
I cannot remember the name and address of that place.

Bar Italia, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Voghera (PV) Italy best panini, the bread was alway crisp and fresh. Unbelievable selection of cold cuts and cheeses.
And there are so many more I would spend all night typing.

A few local places worth mentioning.

Ristorante Pizzeria Pasquale Rulli  904 Division Street Mishawaka, IN
I had their pizza last night make sure if you ever go get fresh garlic in it. Their pizza is one of the best I ever had in the US

Rocco's, 537 N Street Louis Boulevard South Bend, IN
this place has been open for over 50 years the original owner was a paisano from Gioiosa Jonica. His daughter and son in law run the place now. Second best pizza in My area IMO

Giannetto's 100 N Center St. Mishawaka, IN
Best deep dish pizza ever. Period  I have tried the other guys in Chicago and so forth no one comes even close. Family owned, Papa Vic slaves away in the back making your pizzas you can watch him. Be ready to wait a while on a busy night he's a one man show in the kitchen. But once you get your pizza you'll be happy you waited.

Washington DC/Metro Area

Best BBQ: Rocklands BBQ (really the only place I overeat and don't feel guilty at all. Would be my death-row meal)  ;D
Best Coffee: Peregrine Espresso (I think considered top 3 in the nation, lucky to have it near by)
Best Gelato: Dolcezza (locally grown organic fruits used to make unique flavors everyday)
Best Falafel: Amsterdam Falafel and Fries (Dutch Mayo and Garlic Cream and a fixins bar make this place perfect)

Mesquite Tree Restaurant (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g31357-d334824-Reviews-Mesquite_Tree_Restaurant-Sierra_Vista_Arizona.html) - Sierra Vista, AZ - Great atmosphere and food in large portions (at least they were the last time I was there.  Yeah, it's been a while.).

Sconyers Bar-B-Que (http://www.sconyersbar-b-que.com/) - Augusta, GA - Hands down the best southern bar-b-que I've ever had.

La Cervoise (http://www.inbelgium.be/restaurants/belgium/mons_mons_mons_la-cervoise_EN_18150_1705.htm) - Mons, Belgium - Great French/Belgium cuisine right at the center of the Grande Place.  Try the Steak on a rock (fillet of beef "sur pierre") and check out their extensive beer menu (over 200 IIRC).

Crystal City Restaurant (http://www.crystalcityrestaurant.com) [NSFW Link] - Crystal City, Virginia - NSFW Link? You ask?  Well, actually the restaurant is a gentleman's club.  A few years back I went back to DC on a job and a friend of mine invited me out for a good cheap steak.  He was right about the steak, but I was a bit surprised.

Mais Al Ghanim (http://travel.aol.com/travel-guide/Mais+Al+Ghanim-Kuwait+City-restaurants--Kuwait:476:280908) - Kuwait City, Kuwait - Probably one of the best Lebanese Restaurants I've been too.

Kuwait Towers Ofok Restaurant (http://www.kuwaittowers.com/Resturants.aspx) - Kuwait City, Kuwait - Great buffet featuring local cuisine and outstanding view of the Arabian Gulf.

I'll post more as I recall them.  The old processor isn't as reliable as it used to be.  [cheeky]

Since I was in Indy this past weekend, I came across an old stomping ground and of course had to oblige:

The Gyro Shoppe - Broadripple Ave - Indianapolis, Indiana

Fantastic Gyro. Just don't let the kitchen conditions or overall look of the dump deter you.

I've eaten there a hundred times and never been sick.

Great Thread!  [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Seattle, WA

La Carta De Oaxaca - Best mexican food I've ever eaten. Also the only good mexican I've had in Seattle.  :P Oaxacan style, so you gotta like Mole.
http://www.lacartadeoaxaca.com/ (http://www.lacartadeoaxaca.com/)

Jolly Roger Taproom - Excellent food at a reasonable price. Best beer (Maritime) in Seattle, and maybe in all of the PNW.
http://maritimebrewery.ypguides.net/ (http://maritimebrewery.ypguides.net/)

Palace Kitchen - One of I think 5 Tom Douglas restaurants in Seattle. They're all good, but Palace is friggin' awesome, and the atmosphere is great. My favorite "nice place" in the city.
http://tomdouglas.com/index.php/restaurants/palace-kitchen (http://tomdouglas.com/index.php/restaurants/palace-kitchen)

Lunchbox Laboratory - Best hamburger you will ever have. Period. This is what happens when real chefs open a burger joint.
http://www.lunchboxlaboratory.com/ (http://www.lunchboxlaboratory.com/)

Las Vegas, NV

Yollies Brazilian Steak House - Ditch the fancy places on the strip and eat here. Don't order vegetables, just accept it and eat nothing but meat. Amazing.  [thumbsup] Locals place that I ate at growing up.
http://www.yoliesbraziliansteakhouse.com/ (http://www.yoliesbraziliansteakhouse.com/)

Elko, NV

Toki Ona - Killer Basque place. The Star is famous in Elko, but Toki Ona is better IMO. Looks like a dump, but it rocks!  [thumbsup]

Berkeley, CA

Zachary's Pizza - Chicago style pizza in Berkeley. A friend from Chicago said it's as good as any Chicago place.  [thumbsup] Always has a long line, but they are efficient so the wait isn't bad.
http://www.zacharys.com/ (http://www.zacharys.com/)

Incline Village, NV (Lake Tahoe)

T's Mesquite Rotisserie - Fantastic food, all based around their excellent rotisserie chicken. Truly amazing. I probably miss this place the most from when I lived in Reno. Best after-mountain-bike-ride food anywhere.  [thumbsup]

That's all I got. I've been to a few places around the world, but can't remember any memorable places (although I did have some very good food)   :P

This thread is bookmarked. I'm headed to the pacific northwest in a few days, so thanks everyone!

Swenson's drive-ins, Akron OH - Swenson's is a local chain with a handful of stores. They boast that their Galley Boy cheeseburger is the best in the world. It has won a few awards. I don't know (vegetarian), but their veggie burger called the Salad Boy is definitely awesome. They also have incredible milkshakes.

Vaccaro's Trattoria, Akron OH - fine italian dining in a nice atmosphere. Prices are reasonable ($14 - $30 entrees) and the wine list is pretty deep.

Letna Beer Garden, Prague CZE - the most beautiful view of Prague and a very reasonably priced beer.

Andel Beer Garden, Prague CZE - it seems to be more for the locals than the tourists, but there's a really great beer garden with great food near a mall. There's an angel fountain in the courtyard and some of the best beer I've ever tasted.

Rajpoot - Bath, England.  I joked with my friend at the time that on my deathbed, I would utter just one cryptic word ala Citizen Kane "Raj...poot".

Kiskakukk - Budapest, Hungary.  Goat cheese stuffed steak.  Nuff said.

I love eating krokets from Febos in Amsterdam.  Turns out the only way to improve gravy is by deep-frying it.

It may be your standard tourist-grade fare for all I know, but Taza on Queensway in London have served me memorable kebabs.

Belgo - London, England.  Wild boar sausage and mash and Belgian beer.  Oh, yes.

Gambero Rosso - Vernazza, Italy.  I was nearly too drunk to enjoy the best pesto I have ever had.

Kenny and Ziggy's - Houston, Texas.  I haven't been back, but it still makes the list.  Home of the $16 sandwich.  (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=35257.msg616098)

Former Galvestonians - does The Original not make the list?  I prefer Salsas (in the old, tiny location).

I love Belgo Centraal. I haven't been to Belgo Noord. Belgo definitely belongs on anyone's list. I just made something from their cookbook over the weekend. There's a place in Montreal called Bieres et Compagnie that's almost as enjoyable.

Nope, definitely not for me. I was never a fan at all. The Pelican Club has always been a favorite, but it's not open to the public. Leo's Cajun Corner is a don't-miss, but it's not really a restaurant.

Katz's Deli in NYC, Best darn Pastrami around!

Blackie's Drive in Cheshire, CT. They have 2 things, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. Dont bother with a hamburger. Just hold up a few fingers for how many dogs you want. Slather on some mustard and then the home made relish! Awesome.

Mr. Macs Canteen, Monroe, Ct. Like your chili hot? Try the chili dog with the works. Homemade meatless chili. Guarantee to burn on the way down, and on the way out!!

Best lunch sit down style: On 20 in Hartford, Ct. Its on the 20th floor of an office building. Yes your spending about $50-$100 for lunch. 5-10 courses. Over indulgence all the way.

Porchetta, NYC. Best porketta Ive ever had in my life. Extra crispy bits please!!

Ivy Noodle, New Haven, CT. Fried rice. Cheap, fast, amazing.

Wilsons BBQ in Fairfield, CT. It was on food Network for a reason. Best Brisket in Town!!

Anchorage Alaska- Moose's Tooth, great pizza and micro-brew beer.

Now a question, in two weeks Mrs. Sno_duc and I will be in Wien Österreich. Any suggestions ?? She's vegetarian so traditional Austria fare is out.

If you find yourself in scenic Kazakhstan, head on out to Baikonur. From there, take the nearest camel about two hours west until you reach the abandoned military base where they still launch rockets from. You will find a place called the "Fili Hotel" which is hosted by a courteous group of degenerates hoping to die. There you can order a dish that will only be described as "meat".

It's indescribable.

My kind of thread. A few of my favorites:

Louis' bar and grill, New London CT the lobster Bisque is to die for

The elmton, Struthers Oh a dive of a bar in a depressed old steel town with the BEST pizza I have ever had.

Paulies, St. Mary GA incredible food for little money

Wiskey Creek Steakhouse, Silverdale WA. best steak ever.

Monster Sushi, NY NY How can you beat a place that cuts whole blue fin tuna in front of you.

the best thing i ever had was a Mexican plate in El Cajon CA. A little old lady was serving food out of her kitchen window which you then ate at picnic table in her back yard. 7.50 a plate and you got no options just what she had cooked that day. ate there at least 3 nights a week for 4 months till i left San Diego
