Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: 1KDS on May 30, 2010, 10:25:23 AM I like it, the metal flake is a little extreme for me but to each his own. Definitely some unique mods on it and I'm sure it sets it apart from all the others in your area. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: BlackKat on May 30, 2010, 11:15:40 AM Thanks for the input. When I explained to my painter what I was after, this is a bit more extreeeeeem than the old bike of Hailwood, but between the 14 coats of clear and the comments from everyone coming into my shop, I can say its grown on me.
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: ute on May 30, 2010, 12:30:54 PM man that na-cell looks great
classic with the speedo in it try loosing the fenders see how that looks ......i like it very unique Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: lwszabo on May 30, 2010, 02:25:46 PM that looks very good! I love the paint, I think the Ex Box will make it look to thick from a side view, how about some Sport classic looking exhaust in flat black? the seat may be to over the top, but its your bike! Good Luck!
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: ducpainter on May 30, 2010, 02:28:03 PM I like the flake.
People don't realize how much work it is. Hats off to your painter. [thumbsup] Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: BlackKat on May 30, 2010, 02:57:09 PM My painter does great work...3rd generation body shop. That flake is a pain in the butt...as I mentioned above, 14 coats of clear!
I did consider the all black exhaust, but the EX Box is on order and at this point 3 weeks away... with the tail chop and the integrated turn signals in the tail light, the exhaust just looks too fat and out of place to me. I really like that look of the speedo in bucket, I might pick up a 748 speedo though. I think the white is a little too much contrast vs the black of the 748. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Mojo S2R on May 30, 2010, 08:10:18 PM Looking good. The tank is a little over the top for me but I think once you get the new seat on it will really have that 60s look going. I say go with the spoked wheels to continue with the 60s cafe look. Can't wait to see some updated pix. Thanks for sharing. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: msh441 on May 30, 2010, 10:03:28 PM Kickstand arm on backwards?
Work better, or run into a clearance issue? Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Raux on May 30, 2010, 10:12:50 PM i think the exbox would look too modern.
think about megaphones to replace the stock cans for the retro look. also, try to find Aluminum fenders for the front and rear if you keep them, but i do like the idea of not running any also. i also wish you would stay 1 rotor. so few have that so it's more unique. the tail cover should be metal flake too IMO. The metal flake is definitely 70's cool a couple of minor things, but since you ran such great wire and line on the front, reroute the lines and wires that are running across the belt covers. and either remove the oil cooler or paint it black. I hope my bike turns out as nice though Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: billruiz on May 31, 2010, 01:16:21 AM There's no denying the top notch workmanship, but the tank does sorta stick out. Overall, I love it! Can't wait to see the final edition.
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: BlackKat on May 31, 2010, 03:23:22 AM Great ideas from all!
The single caliper concept would save me some money! haha Aluminum fenders are a great idea, as I'm just not in love with the craftsmanship of any of the carbon ones I've seen. Maybe I'd even add a "pedestrian slicer" to it! Thats another reason I was just going to have the guy who made my headlight bucket make me a fender. The Ex Box is paid for and in route, so there's no turning back now, but I will say I love the simplicity and the fact that its just unusual to the eye of anyone into bikes. The new tail solo cover will be painted to match the tank for sure. I do also plan to re route the wiring. I'm told the bike was yellow and the frame was repainted also. Assuming it was stripped down, I can only think that there is better routing for the wires. I might consider powder coating the frame something different this winter... I love the ideas guys...keep them coming! Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Monstyr on May 31, 2010, 10:01:41 AM So far so good.
I too would recommend megaphones or reverse cone megaphones endcans for the look your after. If you dont have a huge budget then it could be worth looking at the budget emgo cans, these are fairly generic but look the part and come in long or short versions. They will be pretty loud as they have little in the way of packing but thats easily fixed. They are also straight cans so may not sit neatly with the lines of your bike, this can also be solved easily, either by getting a local auto shop to make some angle adaptors or use something like the adaptors available for bikes like the Triumph Bonneville serving the same function. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220501368519&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220501368519&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) This is a popular budget option for some sportclassic owners as they are relatively cheap compared to commercially available cans Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: DarkStaR on May 31, 2010, 10:14:06 AM Good Job. [thumbsup]
IMO: 1) no ex-box - go with Megaphones or straight pipe 2) Pantah belt covers. 3) lessen the exposed carbon - paint cowl to match tank, carry some of the tank color to the headlight housing. 4) Paint oil cooler or relocate or just ditch it all together. ... I love it ;D Its like nothing else that you see on all the other Cafe bikes and it keeps the ass end of it thin.
As I said, the new solo cover will be painted to match the tank. I have plans to continue painting the engine the rest of the way. All black. This will include the oil cooler as well. Keep in mind, I've done the work that I have done thus far in just about 3 months time. I have much more to do. I love the input though! Keep it coming if you have ideas! Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Travman on May 31, 2010, 12:50:50 PM So I'm sure the headlight is what anyone is gunna ask me about :)...I wanted retro and while illegal, my best riding buddy is the head of our local CSI...I doubt johnny law will mess with me too much about it. The area in which I live often has heavy fog. There is some function here. OH, Also...A friend of mine is in product development at Hella. he;s going to help me install a good HID conversion that WON'T be blinding to on coming traffic... Why is the headlight illegal? Is it because it has a yellow lense or because it is too bright? What is the significance of the yellow lense anyways? Is it aesthetics or is that the color of fog lights? Also, lets see that cafe CB350. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Travman on May 31, 2010, 12:51:27 PM The only detail I am unsure of is the wheel selection. I might just powder coat the current ones black (or??!!) as there is nothing at all wrong with them. I was also considering an old school spoke set up from a 1000 sport, but I fear the addition of unsprung weight on this bike thats already somewhat starved for power. The steel rims from the GT1000 are heavier than the aluminum rimed wheels of the Sport 1000. I'm not sure, but I thought the aluminum rimed spoke wheels from the Sport 1000 weighed about the same as the stock 3 spoke cast aluminum Monster wheels. Another option are the tubeless Alpinas which could save you even more weight and these have enough clearance for you to use the 4-piston front brakes. Take a look at Stu's latest for a view of the Alpinas. http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=37028.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=37028.0) http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/ALP1/Wheels/ALP1.html (http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/ALP1/Wheels/ALP1.html) I love the seat concept. I hope it works out as well as I'm imagining it. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: BlackKat on May 31, 2010, 01:03:14 PM xxx

Usually when someone uses the word retro modern or cafe or a combination in the title the bike inside isnt either. I like yours. and i'm fussy. ;D not keen on the paint its a bit fancy for me and all those layers of laquer will eat up the weight saving from the c/f lol. +1 on black ceramic coating for the exbox. How about moving the license plate forward and bending it back in the opposite of the current angle? Or even try just leaving it where it is but reversing the angle. Some opinions/suggestions: Ditch the fork reflectors. Reroute the right side oil cooler line to the left side of the engine. Powdercoat rear spring silver or black. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Mojo S2R on July 18, 2010, 08:21:01 PM motowheels used to have a set of SC wheels in their used parts section. +1 Spoke rims would be sweet on that bike. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Markus on July 19, 2010, 02:46:30 AM Your bike looks awesome [thumbsup] Love the seat! I think the ExBox looks really cool... definitely slims down the back end a lot. Black powder or ceramic coating would really look good.
I''ll +3 the spoked SC wheels suggestion. They're heavier than the stock 3-spokes, but would really give the bike a vintage feel. I'd also suggest the lower triple could be powdercoated or painted black to match the top triple. I think that would give the front end some uniformity. Great work. 8) Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Travman on July 19, 2010, 04:19:05 AM Alpina tubeless wheels will allow you to run your stock brakes and are lighter. The SC wheels would require you to switch to the smaller 2 caliper brakes found on the Sport Classics.

Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Raux on August 15, 2010, 03:03:02 AM couple of ideas for you.
paint the exhaust so it doesn't overpower the bike. either paint the carbon fiber fender or replace it with the aluminum road racing one i've got for sale soon. lose the rear fender altogether. powdercoat the spring silver or black the silver forks look fine as they match the lower triple. so if you go with black forks, black out the lower triple. the PS wheels would look great. did you look at the ones for sale to the left? Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: BlackKat on August 15, 2010, 03:32:21 AM xxx
Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: Raux on August 15, 2010, 03:52:30 AM you probably can throw your spring in with the exhaust and get it done for next to nothing at that point.
also, you could think about making a hidden fender underneat and in front of the motor to avoid it being on the spring arm. i understand though. i live in germany. tons of water on the road. been thinking hard about the rear hugger issue. probably gonna keep it off at shows and ride with it. but want a permanent invisible solution. not my bike, but i have this fender I'm not going to use now (http://industrialgrrrl.com/bikepics/images/bike121.jpg) Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? Post by: xcaptainxbloodx on February 18, 2011, 07:27:08 PM the headlight kills it for me, wayy to busy.
your kinda mixing decades in a weird and off putting way, raw alum says oldschool 50-60s, glitter paint screams 70s and CF is 90's+. if you want a retro bike decide on a period to emulate. the glitter paint is rad in its own right and would suit a molded tracybody style tail section and matching fender. (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2165/2034001665_8d560f0dc0.jpg) the aluminum could work alright with the CF and amber headlight but you would have to go with a fairly monochromatic look to pull it off right. try flipping your headlight ears so that they point down and lower the headlight in line with the seat. I think its a bit to big for the bike and sticking it above the triples just makes it appear even larger. Title: Re: My 750 Retro/Modern Cafe...almost there..Opinions? I've heard of one DSS Exbox that got modified to run on a S*R bike but the guy doing the work was hating life trying to get it to work (wasn't me).
