Title: Open Belts on 696/1100
Post by: Link on May 31, 2010, 05:06:36 AM
My GF was checking out another Monster I think it was an SR4 the bike had no covers on the belts and she wants that look on her 696. Is that possible ?
 Thanks

Should be the same process as other Ducs.  Remove belt covers = open belts.  I've had 'em like that for quite some time...no problems.  Also easier to check out belt tension.

Thanks, I'll check out the forum for some pics. also the bike she was looking at seemed to have some anodized red parts had to be the pullys the way she described it.

I wonder if she's talking about the partial belt covers that have some red on them.............I think cycle cat.

FWIW, I've run my bike without belt covers for  50,000 km's and a couple of the belt rollers began to seize up which had to be replaced. It may have happened anyway.....who knows, but it's something to consider.

I've run open belts for the last two years, right up until very recently. I had the SpeedyMoto covers on there and although looking cool, I had a close call. I was riding home and went over a bit of gravel. A few small rocks got kicked up somehow and started bouncing off my engine. I just happened to look down (dumb, I know) and I saw a rock bouncing around the horizontal belt. I immediately pulled over as I had a feeling something bad was about to happen...
Luckily nothing happened and I proceeded to get rid of the offending stone. I rode home and quickly replaced the open covers with closed ones.
Last thing I need is some engine damage.
Paranoid? Maybe. I never had any issues with the open covers but that event changed my mind, even if it was a non-event.

My friend put the Rizomas with windows on his streetfighter.  Great compromise.
Lots of looks with no risk.

Been running with them open for a few years and probably around 10k miles with no issues.
In my case I have the stock covers with most of the center cut out. Maybe having the sides there might deflect some stuff.
Or maybe the resident dirt and grime rejects foreign material for it's domain.

Hell, logic would also imply that having pods would be bad in heavy rain, yet if anything it seems to run stronger.
