Remember in the movies where they would show an immensly dark whole in the ground that had no bottom, that all the bad guys were thrown into as punishment...
Well, it just so happens that it's located int Guatamala:

It's reported that this crazy sink hole swallowed an entire 3 story building and a house.
Judging from this next pic, I'd say that I belive it!!

i saw that pic yesterday and my brain just can't reconcile it. it's friggin... scary.
i wanna see what's below the dark.
Dios mio...
15 feet wide by 60 feet (about) deep - that top pic looks photo-tienda-ed like a mofo, however.
I'd like to see the drill bit that made that hole!! [laugh]
looks like a Vanessa Del Rio video
I can just hear Jeffrey Ross' comparison between that and Lisa Lampanelli's gaping cooch at the next celebrity roast. [laugh]
Seriously though..pit of death is right!
Negative. According to weather.com, the sinkhole is about 200 ft. deep!

Blame it on BACON!!

From what I read there's no photoshopping going on in that first picture. And 200 feet would sure sound more like what we can see.
I wonder what's down at the bottom too!!!

Moron.
At least it's not on fire like that 'Gates of Hell' crater in Turkmenistan.

I agree - but it's just too crazy for that. I read that you can see it on google maps now.

February 24, 2007.
Believed to be caused by a ruptured sewer main.
Also almost perfectly round.
Coincidence?

I remember one in the U.S. a number of years ago and a woman drove her Mercedes into it ....or I should say it was " swallowed " by the the sink hole.
Dolph :)
I don't think it's visible on googlemaps. I saw a vid that is pointing to the corner of 11 Avenida A and 6A Calle but there's nothing there.

What happened to the old sink hole? Does it get filled? Wasn't it also a really deep one? Googlemaps doesn't show anything there besides a building. 2007 Guatemala city sinkhole (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2007+guatemala+sinkhole&sll=14.651873,-90.502893&sspn=0.005138,0.010568&gl=us&ie=UTF8&cd=1&hq=2007+guatemala+sinkhole&hnear=&ll=14.650659,-90.490748&spn=0.002439,0.005284&t=k&z=18&iwloc=A)

Over 300 feet deep.
It's been filled in and several plans have been submitted for redeveloping the site.

+1 I find that very odd indeed.
several years ago one of the drivers for a company I was working for got swallowed up by a sinkhole on I-5 He was in a set of Triple Trailers if my memory serves me right. Our shop steward capitalized on the photo..........Our company logo was
" #1 on 1-5". He took the photo and the logo photoshopped it all and made calender with the heading "#1 under 1-5". Sold a ton of them! [laugh]
Wouldn't you think there'd be some geological interest in the finding out what's down there rather than just filling it in?

For Guatamalans I guess it's just a new place to put your garbage...

Dirt, Water, and a three story clothing factory. ;)
From what I've read their planing a descent sometime soon.
You couldn't pay me enough to be a hole geological hole inspector. I was told in one of my foundations classes that when you spec those giant pier-type foundations (the name escapes me... not piles, the poured ones... ca-something...) that someone has to go down and inspect the bottom of the hole. I can't remember if he was joking or serious.

Truth.
We've had to hire an outside inspection firm to deal with anything deeper than 30'. The Town's insurance won't allow my Building Commissioner to inspect any deeper than that without special equipment and training, so a set of 36' deep pilings required help.
Satellite death ray? Something like that earth quake machine in that movie? Eh who's knocking on my door. @#$%=&
Who knows though - one day a historical discovery could be found like that - imagine an undergound pyramid....

ha.. good one..
apparently not a sinkhole:
http://news.discovery.com/earth/dont-call-the-guatemala-sinkhole-a-sinkhole.html (http://news.discovery.com/earth/dont-call-the-guatemala-sinkhole-a-sinkhole.html)
Pretty cool...in a holy shit kind of way. :o
The circular shape is normal...most sinkholes are round (regardless of cause). Square corners aren't stable and tend to collapse...hence the shape develops to round for natural stability.
I disagree about the article not calling it a sinkhole. While karst topography (limestone bedrock which is soluble in water leading to voids beneath the surface...very common in Florida) is the cause for sinkholes, there are other causes as well. For instance, in the tunneling industry we call a tunnel collapse which expresses itself at the surface (not all do) a sinkhole. Calling it a "piping feature" is bullshit. "Piping" of the soil is the mechanism...but it's still a sinkhole. Sinkhole is a generic term for a hole which opens up from below. Some dictionary definitions may not agree...but in actual practice, anyone except anal geologists calls anything like this a sinkhole.
