Title: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 01, 2010, 07:19:02 PM Some of you may have heard that there is a World Cup about to kick-off in South Africa.
I thought some people might be interested in a bit of discussion. Due to time zone differences and the fact that I am a lazy bastard but still short on time ... I will probably only be a casual observer. But if you lot are interested/excited (and considering some of your lineage there is a fair chance) you can all talk about it here so then all I have to do to catch up is read a few posts [cheeky] Title: Re: World Cup thread Post by: Justo on June 01, 2010, 07:30:48 PM This has a clever and different spin on it.

Australia won't win the World Cup. Some other team will. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 01, 2010, 09:56:26 PM <SPOILER> Australia won't win the World Cup. Some other team will. That's a bit defeatist [roll] [laugh] I've changed the thread title for you. Now if only Harry's intimate areas come good. :-[ Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Monstar_100 on June 02, 2010, 01:28:39 AM I have got my money on the Netherlands doing some really damage this year...
Does anyone else have any picks for a top 5?? Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 02, 2010, 10:04:46 AM Does anyone else have any picks for a top 5?? Top 5? You know how this finals thing works right? [cheeky] Semi-finalists maybe ;) Sorry, sometimes (most times) I can't suppress my internal shit-stirrer. I'm afraid I am not brave enough or well enough informed to have a guess beyond the media favourites. But the beauty of football and a finals series is that the teams as a whole only need to be competitive to get close enough. Then it could come down to a single moment of brilliance, cheating or a complete make the beast with two backs-up by one individual to determine the team's tournament ... all egos, reputations, silky passes, pointless step-overs and experience aside. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 06, 2010, 01:36:09 PM Dodgy win against the Kiwis.
Somewhat lucky win against the Danes. Soundly beaten by the footballing superpower that is the US. As far as preparation for the tournament proper I wouldn't have thought that was too much out of the ordinary. But the Captain's response in saying we are on track after the US defeat has not inspired much confidence. Typical England under achievers. [roll]
<EDIT> I just saw the Rob Green mistake, what a goose, mistakes like that will end up costing you big time. That was much worse than the time Seaman got caught out of position by the Ronaldinho free kick, but then again, that was an unbelievable free kick. [bow_down] I actually picked Korea to beat Greece. Korea played extremely well, Greece had nothing, they started to make it a contest with about 20 minutes till full time. So I don't know what happened between Greece being Euro champs to now. Will be watching the Aussies tomorrow morning hoping for a win but will settle for a draw. Can't wait for the Portugal v Brazil match. [thumbsup] Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: ungeheuer on June 13, 2010, 02:42:03 AM The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts Are you absolutely certain? I'm not so sure :-\just saw the Rob Green mistake, what a goose.. I'm sure about that though.... [laugh]Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: spotcom on June 13, 2010, 11:32:55 AM It was very nice of Germany to let us play football with them.
Pharkin, wasn't that a lesson! :o Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: suzyj on June 13, 2010, 11:57:45 AM Geez - only four-nil.
Missed it by _that_ much. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 13, 2010, 09:34:34 PM That was much worse than the time Seaman got caught out of position by the Ronaldinho free kick, but then again, that was an unbelievable free kick. [bow_down] Still can't convince myself he was going for goal ... from memory embarrassing surprise was his first response - before ego took over. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 13, 2010, 09:39:54 PM It was very nice of Germany to let us play football with them. Pharkin, wasn't that a lesson! :o Outplayed in the first half, embarrassed in the second. Any opinions on Timmy's red (other than it buggering us up for Ghana)? When I saw the red my first thought was 'but he wasn't already on a yellow' then I realised the ref didn't show a yellow ... only red [bang]. Very harsh I reckon. Could have been a different game if we could have taken that early chance ... and then the handball that went unpunished. Sure we would still have been outplayed but the result would have been much different. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Raux on June 13, 2010, 11:14:01 PM damn, guys. You were supposed to piss off my German wife with a win last night. Not give her more attitude >:(
Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: ozzys4r on June 13, 2010, 11:19:28 PM Did anyone really expect anything different..? Really... we suck at soccer... I cant wait for it to be over... :o :o :o :o
Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Stinky Wizzleteats on June 14, 2010, 02:13:26 PM Any opinions on Timmy's red (other than it buggering us up for Ghana)? When I saw the red my first thought was 'but he wasn't already on a yellow' then I realised the ref didn't show a yellow ... only red [bang]. Very harsh I reckon. Looked like he was trying to pull out of the tackle when he collected him. But I agree, too harsh from Referee Dracula. Pim f*cked up, playing Tim as a forward & not giving Harry any game time which he needs, even if we were going to lose anyway. Josh Kennedy needs a rocket up him as well, his timing is way off. Bresciano needs to get in there as well, IMHO. Bring back Viduka I say. ;D Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 19, 2010, 06:21:22 AM Well that was better.
Despite all the blame on Pim for his selections in the first game ... reality is we played shit. Much better performance tonight ... ahh ... this morning ... err ... yesterday ... umm ... much better performance in the second game. Probably screwed though. Now I understand ... watching the cup games I was starting to think those first couple of years on the bike without earplugs were coming back to haunt me. Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Stinky Wizzleteats on June 23, 2010, 08:39:58 PM Well, I was right. ;)
But, IF ONLY! If only they played like they did this morning, if only they had all the troops to pick from, if only, if only .......... Holmans goal was a farken pisser! [bow_down] Cahills wasn't bad either. [thumbsup] Title: Re: World Cup thread (may contain SPOILERS) Post by: Betty on June 23, 2010, 09:20:19 PM Yep - quite simply we played shit against Germany.
A few ifs and buts that would have seen us through on 6 points or so: . Timmy's questionable red card . The German handball in the box (would have changed the complexion of the game) . Harry's questionable red card . The ensuing penalty ... and they are just the obvious refereeing decisions. Wilkshire's miss against Ghana would have been enough. Despite people blaming Pim's tactics in game one they didn't determine the scoreline ... the players just weren't up for it. Did we deserve to go through? That's a tough one, arguably we did more with less talent ... but through my Green & Gold glasses we still tend to cop both ends of the pineapple from the refereeing fraternity (same could be said for NZ from what I have seen). |
