I prefer the older style monster so no no 696 etc. i'm in the UK by the way so dont get too excited at the prices.

My 600 is a 97 its the old school pre dark one in yellow. What i like to call a proper  monster. I should be able to sell it easily in stock form for £1500

My plan was to get a bigger engined monster,swap my goodies onto it then sell the stock 600. Hope fully ending up only spending a few hundred to change.

Theres a 98 900 in red on biketrader. Its at a dealers who want £1800 for it. Its done 45k miles and i have concerns about buying a ducati with that many miles. It looks stock tho.

The other option i have is to buy a 900ss for £1500 and jsut swap the engine and forks onto my monster. And part out the rest. This would cost me more tho and would raise issues with Insurance and with the dvla (our dmv).

What do you think?  is a 45k 900 a good replacemnet for a 20k 600?.
I know my 600 doen't have full compression anymore. so whats the  900 gonna be like with more than twice the miles?

45k miles is not a deal breaker IF the maintenance has been performed correctly as scheduled. I know there are a number of members here with more than that.
Just out of curiosity, how is it that your 600 is not at full compression?

In my opinion, not enough bang to upgrade unless you go 900cc or larger.  Lots of nice 900's out there, probably expensive and high insurance for European market.  Lots of 900's have more than 50k miles on the clock and still run well.  Hard to know about the specific one you are looking at.

I'm going to speak on the hypothetical - not worry about the bikes for sale, except to say that 45k is high.. though might not be a deal breaker - on would have to get a good look over that bike to make a real value determination.

I'll vote for a 900 or 1000 - if possible an S model. In most cases the suspension on a 900/1000 will be better than your 600 (unless you've gone to fiddle with it) - offering more adjustments etc. As we know the S flavor of any Duc got some extra goodies, in the form of carbon and stepped up suspension components. If you start you looking at 2000, then the 900 will be an injected bike, as is any 1000. Not sure if that's a pro or con for you.

As I've not ever ridden a 600, only transitioning from a 620 to a 900IE - I'd expect that the feeling of a 900 or a 1000 will give some 'holy crap' moments at first. A 2001 600 lists at 51 hp and a 2001 900 is 78 and 50 vs 73 Nm of torque... It's a good bump. Not like a 900 is the most powerful thing going - but it was a transitional period when I went from the 620 to the 900. Fun... but there were a couple unexpected wheelies...

But on the swap idea - is there a user parts market there, sufficient that you could find a 900 engine to slot in?

i am the happy owner of a 750 and i would not waste my time and money upgrading unless it was at least a 900 or s2r 800

reason? bike only needs 3 things imo. single side swingarm, dry clutch,
and as always, moar power!

Too bad you are not in So Cal...I might soon have a nice 06 S2R 800 for sale at a very reasonable price.

A couple of years ago i had faulty pick up coils.
The new ones were also faulty. and  part of the investigations into "why the hell is my bike still  not working" was a compression test.
This showed that the vertical cylinder was down on compression but not enough to worry about.
I posted on TOB at the time and a few guys said its a common thing to have happen its cause by overheating  to do with the flow of air to the vertical cylinder.

I'm definately leaning towards a 900.

M900, but try to find one that's lower mileage.  I picked on a 900SS with 12K on the clock for $4,000US.

yeah i've kept looking and found one with 24k on it for about £2000. for a 96.

I can find lots of 900ss's. They not as desirable as Monsters £2000 will get me a 2003 900ss.

Look outside the UK you will find better deals in Germany.

Some of those bikes are really cheap.
Ideally i need one thats close to an airport that i can fly to from Edinburgh on a budget airline.
is there an airport in kaiserslautern?

A bike i can legally ride through Germany to Belgium from where i can get the ferry back to scotland.

if you take ryan air, there is an airport at zweibrucken that's close by and Frankfurt-hahn, that's about 45 min.

in fact i know of an 851 for sale ;)
