Title: More Redlight cameras
Post by: Slide Panda on June 04, 2010, 06:18:22 AM
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/03/AR2010060304456.html (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/03/AR2010060304456.html)

Arlington is adding 4 new red light cameras at eastbound Lee Highway and North Lynn Street; southbound Fort Myer Drive and westbound Lee Highway; westbound Lee Highway at Washington Boulevard; and northbound Glebe Road at Fairfax Drive.

Just watch your back at those intersections. From the article "They determined that rear-end crashes did increase by 27 percent when cameras were used, but crashes in which a car ran a red light and struck another vehicle at an angle decreased by 42 percent."

A 27% increase in rear enders is no good if the person getting reared is on a moto... So keep your radar on high for in attentive drivers behind you at those intersections and/or people panic breaking in front of you

Just a friendly reminder that 3 of the 4 cams are activated today (6/14). Here's a Google map (link (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=112180472697243558166.0004889bbe3ba02f6db13&ll=38.88796,-77.109776&spn=0.103152,0.160332&z=13)) of the intersections created by a coworker.

Thanks for the heads up.  I didn't realize there were so many red light cameras in DC.  I've gotten hit by the speed camera before, but not the red light ones.

More in college park as well. Use the grace period to check your tag hiding, I suppose.

"The Mayor and City Council of the City of College Park have authorized
the use of speed monitoring systems in designated school zones and
within one-half mile of the University of Maryland property. The City
of College Park will start operations of its speed monitoring systems
with a 30-day warning period on October 15, 2010. The location of the
first speed monitoring system will be on Paint Branch Parkway between
Route 1, Baltimore Avenue to the City boundary, at or about Old Calvert
Road. The system will be placed initially in the vicinity of the
intersection of Paint Branch Parkway and the Trolley Trail.
In
accordance with State Law, beginning on November 15, 2010, the City of
College Park will issue $40.00 civil citations to vehicles that exceed
the posted speed limit by 12 miles per hour or more.
The City of College Park intends to use speed monitoring systems on the
additional following roads:

Rhode Island Avenue from Route 193 north to the City boundary
Metzerott Road within City boundaries from University Boulevard to Adelphi Road
Greenbelt Road from Route 1, Baltimore Avenue, to Rhode Island Avenue
Route 1, Baltimore Avenue, from Beechwood Road to Indian Lane
University Boulevard within the City boundaries from Adelphi Road to
49th Avenue
