Title: m750 front end mods, lots of questions...
Post by: Nibor on June 14, 2010, 03:14:10 AM
well the aim is to end up with better braking and suspension. whether or not it happens is a different story ;D

i've got a 1998 m750, and love it! looking at some affordable options for upgrading the front end, i think m900 forks and twin discs seems to be the way to go without breaking the budget. but thats where it gets interesting.

as far as i knew, m900 forks were adjustable. as in all the m900 models, not just some years. ebay has told me otherwise. so i need to find a particular range of m900 forks, that are adjustable, and will still fit in my '98 m750 triples. then there's the tabs.

the caliper and front fender mounting tabs, looking at pics on ebay again, seem to vary a bit. my m750 has the straight tabs, brake mount and fender mounts are both parallel (by eye) with the forks. i've seen an older style m900 fork with both parallel tabs, so i could fit the same fender, but those forks weren't adjustable. again going on my limited knowledge, as they didn't have the small bit you fiddle with on the fork cap, but the larger blank hex cap. then there's other forks that are adjustable as far as i can see, but the brake mounts  on them are on a different angle to the forks, thus i would need two new calipers, not just an extra one? then a third type of mount, for the fender - two plastic circular clip kinda things, not a metal tab to bolt onto. so depending what choice i make i might need a new front fender too.

then the calipers, which fit which fork, and the discs, which suit which caliper, and the lines, which i think due to my U-bracket mount thing i can only have a single line most of the way down, and it splits above the fender.

oh the choices  ??? ??? [roll] ;D

so basically i'm hoping someone on here has a clue, coz i dont [thumbsup]

AFAIK, only the S versions had adjustable forks.  Older 900s used Marzocchi forks.  In 2001, the calipers changed from single pin 40mm. mount spacing to two pin 60mm. mount spacing.  The axle also changed from a 14mm. solid to a 25mm. hollow.  At the same time the fender mount spacing also changed.  At some point the fork diameter went from 41 to 43mm.  All I can remember for now.

I too am in the same boat with my 99 m750. I just snagged from ebay a set of m900 rotors and calipers. My plan is to just use the stock fork for this season and come winter in ohio update the calipers and forks to that of a more modern Monster that has the 3 way adjustable showas. This seems like a cost effective staged approach that doesn't force me to mess with the triple tree in any way.

i was watching a few sets and I think I have less than $250.00 in 2 new 900 calipers as well as 2 new rotors. I also picked up a 748 master for $100.00...but that was just the choice I made to go with my set up...cheaper ones are available.

my 2 cents...
