Title: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: Raux on June 21, 2010, 07:03:41 AM
Does anyone know if the passenger grab rails are available yet? Part no.?

Please don't take this as a smart-a$$ thing to say, but, there are already passenger grab rails formed into the subframe under the passenger seat. They aren't very robust, but they are usable.
If you already knew this, please accept my apologies. The only reason I post is because I was attempting to solve the same issue and had given up until one day my wife was on the bike grabbing something under the seat. She exclaims "hey! there are some cool little hand-holds under here..."

yeah but i'm tightening the exhaust around that area so i need the new grabrails

plus those grab rails leave very little confidence...then new ones also act as a "hey this is the back of the seat, don't fall off" kind of deterent.

I have seen 796 rails but not the 696 ones...  maybe they will fit when they are out?

the 769, 696, and 1100 should all be able to use them. same subframes I'm sure.

Questions or Comments: Hello, will the new Monster 796 "grab handles" for the passenger fit an 1100? Also, will the charger, 69924601a work on the underseat plug on my 1100 Monster? Thank you!

1) Still want pictures!

2) What's the advantage of the Battery charger thingy? (69924601a)  I've got a battery tender and it seems to work just fine, but maybe I'm missing a few hp this one pumps in?

i posted a link to pictures

I asked for a part number and I haven't heard back yet, I will pass on when DMA gets back to me

Batt charger is $80 and I don't have to take the bike down to the frame to attach to battery--just use the plug under the seat that is there already

WOAH... that's not a battery charger under the seat in the tool tray.. that's the Ducati DDA computer data outlet. It hooks up to a special USB device.

It doesn't look like a usb.  they say it will work?

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: Raux on June 23, 2010, 09:09:37 AM
the device is a USB the plug connects to a device via a different plug.

If it's the one that is attached to the tool kit, it's not a battery charger.

My 2010 Monster has the DDA connector and a connector for this thing under the seat (my April '08 696 does not have the extra, just the DDA).  But my '10 also already has a battery tender connection on it; but perhaps the dealership installed it.

@13o was the word. close enough for me. the wife will like the seating better this way. she was always unaware there the back of the seat was. these should help orientate her.

I ordered from Ducati Seattle, they are always easy to work with.

Dave R, do I get a discount for the plug ;)

I agree, this will make two up much nicer and I like riding with her a lot.  I will order mine soon (if not today).  Where did you get yours?  A sponsor  [thumbsup]  ???  You can PM me.....

What I have heard is that the newer ones come with the leads setup, because the optional ABS systems drain batteries pretty quick compared to the standards, so thye do better when charged more often

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails

Back to the rails...

I just showed them to the wife... she doesn't like the idea of holding on to something under/behind her... is this a matter of preference or is there a method for 2-up riding that makes this kind of thing work well?

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: dankatz on June 26, 2010, 06:31:47 PM
My wife prefers to hold on to the FZ6 grab rails more than she prefers to hold on to me.  ;)
I do have a Givi trunk on the FZ6 which is another form of security for her. But, the optional grab handles on the Monsters look to be similar to the FZ6 and in practice are more comfortable than me being held by my wife

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: mattc7 on June 26, 2010, 06:55:27 PM
grab rails work very well for EASY two up riding.  They provide a solid base for holding on, and more importantly allow the passenger to maintain/distribute weight better than holding you. (By this I mean, when you hit the brakes, they don't destroy your jewels by slamming into you, slamming you into the tank). She may not like the idea, but she'll be much easier to ride with if she got used to it.

The 1100 isn't really well tailored for a passenger to be honest...it's ok, but not the strong point comfort wise.

Post by: Raux on June 26, 2010, 09:52:24 PM
my wife varies based on the riding conditions. twisties holds on me. autobahn the rails would work. plus they give her a reference for the back of the seat that you don't get with the bike now.

Give us a report and throw up some pics when they get in.  My wife decided against them but I might still get them and show her the light.

Raux,

do you think these will work with a tail tidy moving the signals?

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails

not sure, it probably mounts at the end of the subframe and not on the steel plate so i think it might be in front or above the signals. when i get it i will know

796 grab rails don't work with R&G Short tail. the turn signals hit them

I tried to sell my wife on the grab rails, but she said she wouldn't like the position of the rails (too low and too far back).  In an attempt to re-convince her we sat on a Aprilia Shiver that has grab rails and her theory panned out.  So, I ended up getting a Triboseat seat covering and it works like a charm.  It's super-grippy, very inexpensive, and hides under the cowl cover when riding monoposto.  Check out my thread below.

So, did you figure it out? Did the 796 grab rails fit the 696 after all? Any pics? Am curious...

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: Raux on September 20, 2010, 06:30:17 PM
the 796 grab rails have three mounting holes. the 696 only has accomodations for the front two. the third would be at the rear of the subframe.

I suspect the newer 696 and 1100 will get the new subframe with the 3 holes.

with a stock tail, it would  mount, but not be as strong a mounting as on a 796.

with the R&G tail tidy, it does not mount as it hits the turnsignal location.

BUMPING OLD THREAD.

Does anyone have pics of the accessory grab rails installed on a 696 or other Monster.

I'm specifically wondering if they might make a good anchor point to strap things to the back seat for touring???

I tried looking at the webbikeworld link earlier in this thread but if one of the pics showed them I'm too dumb or blind to figure that out and see how they are mounted.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance guys.

well it does both... there is a 12v wire going to the battery from that plug too, similar to the obd2 port on all new vehicles

Thanks!!!

Looks like it would be a perfect place to run a couple of nylon straps for a big seat bag for overnights.

I dunno - won't know until I see em... kinda figured since Pro Italia said they'd fit that they would - but will report back after they arrive on Friday.

It's a 2011 696 if that matters?

Look at the end of your subframe past the passenger grab area. if u have holes there u are ok. otherwise u will have only two of three bolts per side.  they use the exhaust mount for the front two

They'll be here Friday - so I'll hold em up to the subframe then and report back.

Heck, even if there was only 2 of the 3 bolts holding them on, they'd likely work for our purpose. We're not looking to carry a passenger, just looking for mounting points to strap a tail bag to for a couple of summer rallys/tours.

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: Kev M on June 07, 2012, 11:06:54 AM
Peaking underneath it looks like all the holes are there...two at the front of where the rail would mount and one at the rear on each side.

EDIT - duh, those 2 holes I saw have nothing to do with it - the front two rail holes are for the muffler mount bracket (I guess Raux had mentioned it, but I didn't realize what he meant until I went to install them).

Title: Re: 696 Passenger Grab Rails
Post by: Kev M on June 11, 2012, 05:53:53 AM
RECEIVED AND INSTALLED. Can take pics if anyone is interested. I think they are going to serve our intended purpose (place to attach luggage straps) quite well!

Nice parts. Fit is on the tight side of near perfect.

Each mounts with 3 bolts - the front 2 are the muffler mount bolts already being used (the grab rail replaces the stock "shimming pad" that goes between the muffler mount and frame rail).  The rear bolt threads into a hole in the underside of the bike frame that, at least on my 2011, was already there, behind the muffler mounting bolts.

As I said, fit it tight, which means it's probably a good idea to start ALL the bolts in a given rail before attempting to run them all down or snug them.

They are threaded into the aluminum frame, so DO NOT overtighten them or you'll probably strip out the holes.

Also, it was initially tempting to be lazy and try to leave the muffler in place but I quickly realized this was folly. The damn muffler is only held on by ONE BOLT and a spring. Just remove it (takes seconds), get it out of the way and installation of the rails will take 10 minutes less on each side if you do that. With the muffler in place it is tight to get an allen key or ratcht in there.

Lastly, IF you use a ratchet to tighten the bolts, again, remember you're tightening into aluminum, DON'T GO TOO HEAVY HANDED. Hold it by the head and NOT the lever.

Figured I might as well add a pic of those passenger grab rails being used as I intended (as an anchor point to strap luggage while touring).
