Title: S4Rs Tricolore question
Post by: amnesia on June 21, 2010, 10:52:16 AM
Hi all;

This is a dumb question, but maybe someone else has this problem.
My new S4Rs Tricolore has a mirror problem.  The Left "mickey mouse" mirror vibrates so much that you can't see anything in it.  The right mirror is fine.  I kind of like the mirrors and don't want to change them.  Is there anyway to correct the vibration?

Thanks
Amnesia

Maybe obvious, but have you tried tightening it?

I actually ride with my stock mirrors - i commute in Boston area traffic and like to see what's going on (have a bar end on there too [cheeky]).

Mine get loose and vibrate - just hit 'em with a wrench - IIRC one side goes opposite thread.

One of the mirror mounting threads is indeed LH thread (opposite of the standard RH thread).  This side is denoted by a small 'V' in the 6-edges of the nut.  On that side, it'll be Righty-loosey, and Lefty-tighty.

Also check to make sure the bar ends are tight and inserted at the same depth.  They help dampen handle bar vibrations.

This is what I've been wondering about.  They are both tight.  Just the lefte seems to vibrate more than the right.  It's a very fine vibration which makes visibility impossible.  I suspected the bar ends.  How are they tightened, and how far in are they supposed to go?

It's also possible that the mirror head itself is loose and I don't know if there's anyway to tighten that....

I have different mirrors than you, I have clip ons and I still have the same issue.
Maybe it's "normal" - I don't know.

Two things to try?
- buy another stock mirror (should be easy to get through "parts wanted". Lots of people buy aftermarket)
- loosen the handle bar and slide it 0.5 - 1 mm sideways, then tighten (!) and see if that helps.

I had the exact same problem on my '07 S4Rt.  I dicked with it for long time even breaking it apart and adding weight and tightening it up all without much success.  Don't ask me why the right is ok but the left is a total blur? Eventually I got fed up and bought a pair of Rizoma Protypes.  ROCK SOLID.  Best upgrade I ever did.

Now that's exactly what I'm looking for!  I couldn't believe I was the only one with this problem.  I'll check out those Rizoma's.  I've actually kinda gotten used to not seeing out the left - not ideal though!

I've got lot's of other questions about the S4Rs's "quirks" but I'll save them for another post.  I'm new to Ducati, but I am learning quickly that you have to put up with lot's of "inconveniences" to own a bit of Italy (like no tank range, can't put your toe on the right footpeg, bits and pieces rattling off, engine stalling mid corner, runs like a volkswagen under 4000 RPM, twitchy steering, tendonitis L hand, ............need I go on.)  I'm told I need to drop a couple of grand on a DP exhaust and ECU to make the engine run properly.  Seems they had to make the engine overly lean to pass euro emission standards.  So how come my Honda sports bike ran like a dream right out of the factory?  I guess they don't sell Honda's in europe!

All kidding aside, I'm actually starting to enjoy the beast - but now I have to take it in for it's 12,000 km service so that'll probably change my mind.

no tank range-yup.
can't put your toe on the right footpeg-Assuming you mean without burning your boot? Yup.
bits and pieces rattling off-That hasn't been my experience
engine stalling mid corner-That hasn't been my experience
runs like a volkswagen under 4000 RPM-yup, but it got better after my 7500 mile service
twitchy steering-check tire pressure, ride height, and squared-off tires.
tendonitis L hand-do you ride with your forearm parallel to the ground?
now I have to take it in for it's 12,000 km service so that'll probably change my mind.-you may spit blood once you get the bill

Good luck!

Look here on the forum for sources to reprogram your existing ecu for way less than buying a DP.  The stock fueling SUCKS..

Steering twitch can be solved  with a damper - $

yea, its got a short leg.

Just give it some gas and all the niggles go away  ;D

bits and pieces rattling off-the big heat shield over the top of the can fell off while riding!
engine stalling mid corner-Usually happens after riding hard when I gear down at an intersection and then give it gas.  I'm sure it's cause it's running lean.  It doesn't happen often, but when it does it dies instantly without sputtering at all.  No warning.  If I happen to be leaned right over it could be trouble
runs like a volkswagen under 4000 RPM-yup, but it got better after my 7500 mile service -I can only hope
tendonitis L hand-no, I was referring to the stiff clutch (which I actually like) in rush hour bumper to bumper traffic
twitchy steering-check tire pressure, ride height, and squared-off tires.  This is the one that really bugs me.  tire pressure is fine,  new tires, and I had the suspension set up by the best suspension shop in town.  My sportsbike was stable as anything in a lean without the addition of a dampner (not to mention that most of them come with one these days).  The S4Rs seems to have very sensitive steering in the lean and doesn't inspire confidence.  I think it's simply because of the geometry and the extremely light front end.  I just don't trust it.  The only way I feel comfortable is when I lean way forward over the front end.  I realize that the answer is probably a steering dampner, but then I will have to contend with not being able to lift the tank, getting the tank gouged out by an aftermarket unit, or dropping the big bucks on the DP unit.

I took an 1198s for a test ride just to see if I was crazy, and it handled like a dream.  Engine ran great as well.  Loved it!  None of the above mentioned problems.  I will probably get one soon.  My wife actually wants to trade her 696 in for one (can't say I blame her)  There's bound to be fights over who gets to ride the Corsa

I just had to report back that I took Cdawg's advice from a different post and bought an O2 Manipulator from Jason http://www.fatduc.com/ (http://www.fatduc.com/) and WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

It took about 30 minutes install I was ready to go.  It was a bit tricky finding the connector, and the service manual was invaluable.  The o2 manipulator fit nicely on the S4Rs.

I knew it was going to work on the first start up.  No "balky" chugging, just a crisp start.  The engine now purrs like a cat.  Gone are the surges and lurches, not to mention stalling.  It has transformed my bike from something I didn't really like, to something I love!!  I can now feel what all the nice components on the bike are doing.  I was going to sell the bike, and now I will never part with it.  It was the best $80 I have ever spent.

I only wish I had know about this little product a year ago when I bought the bike.

Cudo's to Jason  [thumbsup]

Now if someone could just tell me how to keep my wife off the bike so I can ride it too

Here's a picture of the install if anyone else is trying to install one on and S4Rs:

I couldn't figure out how to post a picture from the service manual, but the connector location is on page 497

You were likely running very lean...Arrow race exhaust?
